It's not just the kids that enjoy them, parents and grandparents too.

            Hi Ashley

Am I correct in thinking that the motor is directly in the water with no protection, or have I missed something ?.

              Hi

Yes underwater even brushed motors work ok underwater, my first powered boat being a piece of pointed 2" X 1" timber with a Kako motor underneath with a propellor pushed on the shaft, and a recess on the top with pins for the wires to a HP7 Ever Ready battery, that would have been around 1962

Nothing new under the sun !!

              Regards Ray

Funny thing is that back in the day when we flew brushed 400's I used to run them at low voltage underwater to bed the brushes in. The amount of black crud (carbon) that came off was amazing. At that rate I would have thought that they would have worn out very quickly. They didn't last long anyway with 9.6v through a 6v motor and too hot to touch after a 3min flight which was the highest battery capacity available.

Brushless are a completely differentiate animal. The ROV crowd have run the underwater for years although they have often potted the coils in epoxy and changed the bearings for plastic.

I once had a tug sink and was under water for 20-30 minutes. I say water it is more like 50-50 water to duck poo. When I eventually dredged it up the motor was still turning! All I did was wash the hull out with fresh water. It still works perfectly now, many years later.

                    Hi Chris,

Yes back in the mid ninties those Graupner Speed 400 hundreds took a bashing from 8 nr AA cells in a Model Designs FW190, but it was 3 minutes of fun

I'm still flying the same electric Acrowot for the last 10 years !!

The electric bits are so much more expensive than IC

                    Regards Ray

Tested the Swordfish with the little sharks fin and what a difference!!! unfortunately the battery wasnt full, and as I changed it the fin fell off so couldnt confirm the high speed turning, but it looked great going reasonably fast.

Have glued the fin on properly now.

                      Big LCT out.

No issues with anyone elses stuff.

IF the brushless motors could have the bearings changed to plain bronze or brass, they would last forever underwater!! Perhaps a spray of varnish might help the insides before use?

As I remember it (my memory isn't that good) the users that I met had bearings that one of them had machined from "Delrin" which I think is an industrial plastic. All that water kept them nicly lubricated.

They got the epoxy into the windings with the use of a small vacuum chamber.

Your memory is spot on Chris. The lower bearings in my prop shafts are Delrin and I've heard of it being machined.

I've also heard of round bar from this company http://www.igus.co.uk being machined for bearings. They do some interesting products including plastic bearings with plastic or glass balls. Might be a bit expensive though?

                            Hi All

We have been using it a lot of model boats because of saltwater.

                            From slow to fast boats.

Trouble is that a lot of these bearings are very small and machining replacements would require a high degree of accuracy.

Turn fin on Swordfish fantastic, although the first battery was not fully charged and the boat didn’t go as fast as usual, but the difference was plain to see. The fin fell off then (as it was only temporarily secured) so couldn’t try at full tilt. I have glued it on properly now so next week will expect great things!

Big LCT performed as usual, drawing massive crowds (at least 4 sometimes) to see all the tanks and figures on it.

All other boats performed well, no smoke, breakdowns, bits falling off…

Richards Dragonfly really performing after a change to a three bladed prop.

Would they really require a "high degree of accuracy"? I am sure one of the resident experts could tell us but I would have thought that a reamed motor shaft hole of the right size would allow for a non friction contact with the motor shaft and a little epoxy / loctitie bearing fix would hold it in place. Yes a lathe job but beyond that…?

I agree that when motors are only £6 it may not be worth the effort but with the way the £ is going that might not be for long.

I suppose someone with experience could “knock some up”. Not being one of those it’s all a dark art to me….

It is just possible that bushes of some sort are available in not perhaps the right size, but in the order-of, requiring tittivating rather than making from scratch?? It’s amazing what’s out there when you search.

Just tested Sonic, and the wet receiver has dried ok. I took the case off and will varnish the board. I have scooped out some of the cockpit foam and will house the thing in there and It will be above the level of any water coming in the main section. He says…..

Will change the 1400Kv motor for a 2200Kv one tomorrow, just for a larf. With hopefully a bit more speed it will not bog down so early.

It was only 21C today before an hour of solid rain.

The East coast of the dark island to the north(Australia) is flooding again !!!

Dam the big coats, head south to Tassie to the warm weather.

Yes we have a few bushfires, but we are getting better fire fighting gear finally.

Hope you are still getting our canal waters, if not let me know.

Also another convict is heading south ( MFA Spearfish).

Only 21c !! At east you had some rain to dampen such soaring temperatures!

Nice boating Sunday. Sippi…wow, before a loosened prop shaft adaptor nut stopped play, but the one run was quite spectacular!

Turn fin on Swordfish fantastic. Walrus performing really well. LFM floating in less than spectacular fashion. I heard someone call it a torpedo boat as they went past….

Other chaos boats ok, Richards take on the Dragonfly good, needs a small amount of tweaking.

Peter still in the adjustment phase with his big hydrofoil.

Nice morning, quite warm. The deer were only audible in the distance.

Moana went well in the windless conditions, but the Farman wasn’t going so well and it was either the lack of a wind blown surface (to unstick the hull from the water) or my 2s’s are losing it. Certainly one doesn’t seem to be cutting the mustard. Forgot to a) bring the sound unit and b) put the pump battery in the ULTIMATE, so not as good as could be.

All other chaps boats performing well. Overdue visit from Noel who had the “Devils Toothpick” out and that was very fast.

Stuck some 1/100 men on the Royal Sovereign top. Undecided…they are probably a touch big, but the 1/150 figures deffo looked a bit small. Will see what e erroneous thinks when I bring it down.
