cheers Ray. Scary prop doing 20,000 rpm!

Christiansen wanted the boat to look like the front end of a P40 fighter, essentially, and his sketch (not included in the article) reflected this. He could not have forseen the consequences of his design.

I will send you a video of it Ray, its not very good but shows just how it goes.

I often wonder how many people actually build these free plans??

There was a discussion on this on Mayhem recently. Probably not that many get built.

An interesting point that came out of it though is that readers can obtain information from the builds that can be used in their own and I've done this myself.

I have used small Neodymium magnets to secure both superstructure and others bits to models. I tend to use a magnet and a washer. I guess if you used a magnet of both parts it would be really secure.

Beware magnets. The modern high strength magnets are very strong & once attached can be very difficult to separate without causing damage. Use them cautiously. Fortunately the glue between the magnet & canopy failed on mine before I did anything awful.

Free Plans – I suspect the simple construction models get built more often than the complex examples. There is a steady stream of Glynn Guest models on RC Groups, on their dedicated Facbook group and at model shows. Unfortunately the last plan of his that was published (Galateia 2021.11) was, I suspect, built by very few whilst I know of several others with the editor that I could see being much more popular but which have not been chosen for publication.

I agree with Chris Fellows that I have learnt a lot from reading the free plan articles even if I have not built the models. They are normally the first bit of the magazine that I read even if I don't get to see the actual plans!

The price asked for them on ebay also suggests some sort of demand.

                Hi All,

I think the free plans in the magazine are it's life's blood, I would say because I'm up to 15 or so published in the last 20 years, with a some freelance designs included based upon fullsize practice , but as I have been studying other peoples plans for 60 years, and Vic Smeed is and always will be the greatest influence model designers and a large inspiration for my stuff, some of his designs based upon fullsize practice, I'm not sure how many people want build cartoon character boats these days?

maybe my most popular design so far have been the Yachting Monthly sailing cruiser Wild Duck which is available from Sarik plans, followed by the Cigarette power boat plan which isn't, the designs published used to go to Sarik for distribution/sales but this is no longer the case.

Chris if you on digital subscription I guess you miss out on the actual drawings ? I liked very much the last free plan of the LCT by Francis

As they are no longer being sold they should be pdf's as part of your subscription so you can get them printed off If you feel the need. ?

                Regards Ray

                  Ray

I agree totally 100% about digital subscriptions and plans but someone will raise copyright issues which have absolutely no value if they don't do anything with the plans anyway.

I note that this German aeromodel magazine does exactly what you are suggesting & makes them available:   FlugModell

I had thought that your Ferret design would be amongt the most popular of you recent models. I have seen a few build reports.

Just a thank you for submitting your designs. smiley

                    Hi Chris,

I will talk with Lindsey this week about pdf's I don't really think copyright will be an issue as they are now not being sold by somebody who has bought the rights, ultimately I would say the copyright would rest with the designer. My long time friend Tony Nijhuis has probably had 100 aeroplane designs published free in RCM&E mag and keeps the rights to sell them as part of his business selling accessories, I have loads of his stuff

I would be pleased to see the free plans being available and stop the cheeky buggers who photocopy the plans and sell them for profit on ebay for more than the magazine !!

Rather like yesterdays news paper today "Old News"

                    Regards Ray

I think that the problem is above Lindsey's pay grade as I am also a digital subscriber to RCM&E (sister publication) and I have the same problem there.

                      Worth a try however.

I don't see the problem with free plans being supplied as PDFs with digital subscriptions. With the magazine they don't have any real control over what happens with the free plans once the magazine reaches the customer and as they don't carry any back issues they aren't losing any future revenue. I guess we are only talking small numbers anyway.

Don't know about any third party vendors though.

Trouble with PDFs though is that if bigger than A3 they can start to get expensive to get printed. Better to track down a copy of the mag with the plan.

Most models featured as plans will not be built by me so the cost of printing is not relevant.

Having said that I enjoy reading about most of the models that are the subject of free plans. The articles are very incomplete without the plans which often contain much detail not included in the text.

If I actually want to build one then I agree that it is better to track down a hard copy unless it was a very simple plan in which case I would just tile it..

                              Hi All,

I could see the logic of copyright whilst MyTime Media owned the plans service and made money from it, but once they sold it to Traplet who went bust and Sarik took over, the new recent designs are not available, almost makes them collectable

The exception probably being RCM&E with Tony Nijhuis who still sells his plans with the accessories.

I'm not aware of any thing of this sort to do with the bi-monthly Model Boats free plans. I think as Chris says they are not much use to people at A4 & A3 but gives the reader an idea what it's about

                              Regards Ray

The size of the plan is not an issue as long as I can read any text that is printed on the plan. I like the pdf idea as I can enlarge on my screen to see any detail that I want to see.

The discussion here about the ongoing availability of the free plans is of interest to me too. I was always keen to make the recent LCT 7074 plan accessible to future modellers and, with Lindsey's approval, had offered a slightly different version on A1 paper ( so that the sawn – off bows section could be put back where it belonged) to the Museum of the Royal Navy and the Southsea D-Day story museum for them to sell at their shops as a fund raiser with the additional aim of getting agreeement for a few of their official photos of the LCT to be published in the accompanying build articles in return but I never managed to get anyone who would take the issue forward at their end.

I was intending to let the dust from the change of ownership of MB magazine settle down a bit more then raise the question about on-going availability of the plan with Lindsey and would be interested to hear from other authors with any other thoughts on this.

I think you really need someone who is versed in copyright law to mull this over. I seem to recall, a long time ago, signing a treatise handing over rights of my verbiage and pictures to MB. Although the ownership has changed once or twice I assume this still stands.

i don’t know if anyone else has signed, I would have thought so, and if so the rights to the free plans would also have been handed over I assume. As it happens I am on the verge of submitting a plan, which I am hoping would be built in large numbers, and you will see why when the time comes. It may of course be too outrageous for real modellers but we will see.

Its small beer really for these companies, and probably Francis why the offer of your plans to the various museums came to naught. Not an answer I know, but…

Off topic, but it’s supposed to be a monsoon tomorrow and just in case it’s not I am undecided as to what to THRASH at the pond. If it’s windy I may even dust the Herald off.

New top sorted apart from a rear hold-down…set screw into a captive nut either end with “bucket” disguise. After that I will get around to painting the hull, satin black acrylic, so no great effort.

THEN it’s time to design the Ultimate Bushy park boat. This will be the best boat in the world, probably, and likely the only one I will ever need to take to the park, eclipsing all others in it’s all singing, all dancing do-everything form.

Wow…..just as i’ve Written dancing down, I have had this really good idea,…

oddly enough we had rain very early, but no rain from 8ish onwards! A bit nippy at pond, however the Sunderland was back on form after having a port No1 engine change!

Current measurement shows 10A at full-power, so 2.5A per small brushed motor,

I remember the thread Ray. The boat probably needs a repaint now!

Latest top, the ultimate boat top has hit a snag and I have had to cut1/3 off and re-glue it back on….

The rear end seemed to have developed a downward sag and was holding up the centre so I put it on the bandsaw and sliced the rear end off! It’s gluing back on now, and as it happens the cut is next to a bulkhead so not really too much of a issue.
