      Hi Mike

      Thank you for your comments.

Please don't ever worry about making suggestions.

A cathedral hull is one of the types that I looked at when designing Thor and whilst it didn't suit my needs for this project as didn't sit deep enough in the water however I did use a cathedral derivative when working on RiverCat for exactly the reasons that you have stated.

      Thanks again

      Paul

        Dear All

An update on progress with the sailing prototype.

The main framework is made from 7mm birch ply (5 core) with 5mm x 5mm stringers.

        Overall length 4ft, width 1ft

Looking pretty good so far Paul. Don't know how you do. Taking a completely new design from head to drawing board to initial model mock up.

Still I am pretty new to model boats so have a lot of catching up to do.

            Hello Paul

Are you still going ahead with the Steering Comp option?

            What about the width problem?

Can't understand the reason for all that would construction?

            Just curious

                Hi Bob

The reason behind all of the wood is strength, the boat will have two powerful motors and the hull has to be heavily built to evenly distribute the load especially when towing.

Not given up on steering competitions as it will be fitted with four thrusters.

It is so much easier building a boat using substantial bits of wood rather than messing about with bits the size of matchsticks.

When I made the Nelson, I actually had the hull clamped in the workmate and used a plane to start shaping the bottom, followed by a belt sander!

I've added some more parts to the sailing prototype frame.

                      Hi Paul

Can I ask how you take a picture or Photo or design, which ever you have, and turn it into a build plan. I would like to try something for my son and have an idea of what I want but no clue as to how to transfer the idea into a plan.

                      Cheers

                        No problem with helping.

First things first…..what do you want to build and how big?

This is going to sound silly, but I want to reproduce an Octonauts Gup B, not necessarily a diving version but maybe just a floating one to start with.

It doesn't sound silly and having looked at the item in question I have to say that once you take the cartoon aspect out of the equation it is quite a challenging design to reproduce as it is all curves.

A very interesting challenge but before we go any further you must decide on an approximate size as this will have a huge influence of the design and materials used.

This would be a very challenging build but quite a lot of fun to see working.

                                  Hello Wraith

I would recommend you buying the actual toy and scale it up

You would have more fun also, if it was a dynamic sub version too

Thor is almost skinned with 4mm birch ply and is getting nice and strong… and heavy.

Looking around for a big pair of heavy duty 24v motors.

I like the idea of a powerful tugboat, towing the club`s rescue dinghy, round the lake idea?

                                      Now yer talking!

Or a chunky steam engine?…..Coal fired of course!

I have been able to use lightweight panels in the non critical areas and coupled with the many weight saving cut outs I have managed to keep the construction weight down.

                                              thor 102 (small).jpg

There is plenty of room inside for motors, pumps and batteries.

                                              thor 103 (small).jpg

The hull is very strong and rigid.

Forming the skin around the curve of the bow proved to be quite entertaining as, even after steaming I still had to use screws to hold the skin in position whilst the glue set.
