A member of the Mayhem site has just launched a new website covering the classic(!) range of Taycol motors which powered many model boats in the 1950s and 1960s. There is a lot of interesting information and you can see it here: http://taycol.hobby-site.com/

Colin, very interesting website. I eagerly looked at the “using the TAYCOL in a modern boat” (or something similar) but this did not enlighten me as to the commonly held belief that they are almost impossibly to adequately suppress (man speaking who has NO knowledge of the Taycol subject). there was even something about making them reverse. Good stuff for those wishing to preserve authenticity !

There were also links to a forummy thing WHEREUPON I found snippets of an article by (someone whose name I forget) a person, with all those tips about suppressing that we grudgingly give out on the forum to newbies, were discussed for all to see. Super stuff, I might take a print-out.

Great website presentation, if a bit mean on the grubby fingerprints, I know my B.S.A manual has more oil on it than an … no, i wont say it..

"…and you can see it here: http://taycol.hobby-site.com/…"

Alas, you can't see it there any more – the free hosters withdrew their 'free' service

It's now at http://taycol.co.vu Have a look at the latest article on mending the brushgear… and don't forget the Keil Kraft site, now on http://eezebilt.co.vu ….

              Well, that didn't last long!

Almost as soon as I set up the .co.vu site, the company announced that they were ceasing to provide free domains, but would allow the ones already up to stay (though without any update facility).

I kept the site going until mid-December 2015, at which point my IP provider had a big outage, and when the service came back all the IP addresses had changed . So now my .co.vu sites don't point to the correct IP address any more, and I can't update this.

So I have simply switched to another free provider. Dot TK this time. So the new address of the Taycol site is http://taycol.tk. And all my other sites will be going there shortly – Eezebilt, Oldboats and a new Marinecraft one I am starting to put together…

Have you thought about getting a web domain of your own instead? Those free sites tend to be just what you have experienced them to be, i.e. unreliable and ever-changing. There are plenty of serious web hotel services these days through which it is as easy as anything to register and set up a domain. Personally I use one.com (**LINK**), where a domain costs me about £20 a year including renewal fees, and with which I'm very pleased, but there are many others, I'm sure.

Apart from beeing able to run one's sites ad-free and with full functionality and services available, the real advantage is that the domain name will be yours for as long as you pay the yearly renewal fee, and should you at some point be unhappy with the web hotel you've chosen, you can very easily move the domain name to another without having to change any URLs or anything. And because you are a paying customer you can get proper support and make demands (within reason) on the product!

I long ago abandoned the free hosting services as I found that, although the lunch was (sort of) free, it wasn't very tasty, and personally I'd rather pay a reasonable amount for a decenter sort of meal.

Hi DG, thanks for keeping the sites going, they have given me a lot of pleasure. I’m curently on a fireboat, and really enjoying myself. I should add that I have been modeling for over 50 years, and have lost count of the boats I’ve made. Returning to fun modeling is like a breath of fresh air, keep it up.
Oh yes, I love my Taycol too.
If you choose to use a paid for site I’m sure many of us would chip in, I pledge to do so, and I hope some others will do the same.
                  Charlie.

Alas, Banjoman, the track record so far provides very good evidence for your statement! And it is very kind of people to rally round with offers of help, as Mr Oates has done.

But I am a strong believer in the concept of free software – I believe that information ought to be free and unencumbered with copyright controls, and so I would like to keep supporting the free software community for as long as possible by providing services based on its use. I'm sorry that as a result the service is less attractive for end users than a commercial service might be, but I think that free provision is how the future of computing services will develop, so long as at least some people are prepared to keep working in the field (even if the services they provide are quite minor and specialist…)

Let us see how far we can go on nothing!
