Hi Christopher This one is simple ,all you need to do is send a Personal Message to Paul Thomason who will give all the advice you need . To contact Paul go to top of the page and open inbox logo and follow prompts

Paul designed the model and will either post you a Hard copy or if you have a computer can send it to that

I am currently building one for my wife along side a 48 ft Narrow boat so am taking time. Good luck and welcome to the forum wink

The video shows a Broads cruiser doing about a scale 30-40 knots! Why would you do that? The hull of the real boat wouldn't do that with a Merlin on board!

              Hi Christopher

Thank you for your wonderful donation I have seen your message and responded, basically I need your email address for a download copy (its all explained in the pm)

              Hello Michael

Thank you for manning the desk….again (just like Haydock) from reading your posting it looks as though the model narrow boat has been upgraded to a full size version, or have I read it wrong.

              Hello Martin

The hull has been designed for a multi purpose role and can be built either as a Norfolk Cruiser, a Fast Fisher or MTB. The hull is 'flighty' and requires very little power to make it plane…..as you can see from the video even a small single motor can produce more speed than is strictly necessary.

However in its 3 motor MTB version the hull really comes to life and the builders appreciate the speed and handling.

I have been playing around with an open cockpit speed boat version which might appeal to your style of building……what do you think?

I'm sorry, I didn't pick up that point about multi use.

I am effectively doing something like you suggest by reworking a 99p ebay Sea Hornet into a Chris Craft 16 ft runabout.

Normally, I'd make a specific hull as a model of a certain boat and am doing that with the Darby One Design and the Hornet II, although I have a "generic" Griswold design in frame that I'll do a Greavette job on.

I like my boats to be as scale in motion as possible. But your hull certainly looks willing to go! And as a Broads Cruiser is very attractive.

                Cheers,

                Martin

                  Hi Martin

I also like my designs to be as scale speed accurate as possible….your comment about a Merlin wasn't far off the mark as I originally calculated the hull at full size using three Griffon's for motive power.

Haha. Griffons? I didn't realise they were used as marinised versions until Unlimited Hydros anyway. They must have golloped the juice at planing speed. And imagine the noise!

The Griffons were used in high speed RAF boats from the mid 1950s however the engine was a favourite of the SOE for clandestine high speed trips across the Channel during WW2.

Hi Paul Sea Spray is developing very well ,looking at fitting the deck as in one piece as we discussed .The narrow boat is being built in 1/12 scale from photos of the wonderful Doncaster Tug built by Barry Jenkins ,it was 48 ft so hence confusion by me sad

                          Hi Michael

Fitting the deck as a single piece is harder to do but I think the end result is well worth the effort.

If the narrow boat turns out in the way that you described it during our chat at Haydock then it will be superb.

Guys just to let you know I finally got started on my Ellie build after getting "nearly finished" on Smit Rotterdam.

I have been building for a couple of weeks off and on and have nearly all the pieces cut out and the hull is coming along. The drawings are great and have made the build fairly easy. Many thanks.

I made the decision to fill the bow with balsa blocks and sand them to shape to give the 1.5mm ply something solid to follow when bending.

In the end I bought one of the little Hoover steamers and it works a treat for bending the ply to shape but the balsa I feel helped firm things up during the process.

I opted for the twin motors as I have a pair of JP Pro 480's lying around which I am worried may be a bit "whizzy" so am have opted for a pair of Brass Propeller (A Type) 25mm R/H-3 Blade-M4.

If I can remember how I will try and post some pictures.

                              Hello John

You are right about the 480's providing plenty of 'umph' but don't worry about them overpowering the hull as it was designed to accommodate up to three 500's.

I am looking forward to seeing the build photos.

                              Good luck

                                Hello Paul

Finally got the bow sorted me thinks. to make sure I poured a dollop of Fast-glass resin into the space and stood the hull on end. Just as well as I had to tape the seam to stop it leaking.

Cut back the bulkheads and sanded down ready to coat with sealer. Intend using the Eze-Kote system as I have never tried it before in fact I have never coated the outside of a hull with anything but paint before!!

                                I may need that luck

                                John

                                  Hi John

Pulling the ply around the bow is the hardest task in this particular design and everything else should be plain sailing. You are not alone in your thoughts about the bow construction as my bow designs have been the subject of discussion especially amongst some of the more senior and distinguished members of our hobby.

Eze-Kote is very good but being a skinflint I usually use a car spray primer/filler to seal the hull as it is much cheaper (usually from £1 shop) and is compatible with most cheap car paint spray cans.

If I have a large boat to spray/seal I use the road marking spray cans that are available at Builders Merchants or B&Q, cheap as chips and easily rubbed down to a fantastic smooth finish.

Have you remembered how to post photos yet?
