      Answer regarding hydroplanes from yesterday

      Bob

I have been looking at this all morning and I have bad & good news.

Firstly the bad news, as I suspected the hull is the wrong shape and to heavy for a hydroplane device as it would only create a minimum amount of lift with lots of splashing.

Sorry Bob but hydroplanes wont work on this hull.

        OK Paul

Matter closed for the time being

        But one parting shot…..

What if I fitted stubby airfoils at deck level?………eh?……..Similar to the Ashley funny planes?

        That`s for later…….Bob

          Bob

Ashley's funny planes rely on a phenomenon called ground effect where the craft rides on a cushion of compressed air between the craft and the ground, these machines require a large wing lower surface area to create the ground effect.

The Ellie hull is totally the wrong shape and stubby wings wouldn't generate any significant lift.

There seems to be an untapped source of something new here?

I`m talking high speed launches with wings!

Take a reasonably fast speed boat and add wings…….I feel sure, some of them will take off and glide a certain distance…..Just like a flying fish?

What have you got Ashley that fills the criteria?

              Worth a try?

                Bob,

There is a limit to which basic hull designs can be developed and from a Norfolk Broads cabin cruiser to a high speed launch is possibly pushing the (back of) the envelope just a trifle…

We don't need any cloak and dagger work round here, Ashley

                    Just give us the spiel!

I wasn't proposing my cruiser to have the flight test……But a brushless Ninja missile!

Finally fitted the top deck and the start of the real fun begins!

I need to decide now on the hull and deck covering……Varnished veneer or Bob`s patented riveted plates with the Ali touch?

Sorry to mention that Paul is not so well at the moment, chaps and I`m sure you will all join me in wishing Paul a speedy recovery to his normal happy self

We can all do with a break now and again from the hard driving stress that is modern Model Boating.

Bob. Are you going to use the old slo-mo top?

It is very nice, but personally I think it makes the hull look a bit small.

My suggestions, if required, or even if NOT required, are..

site the slo-mo top well rearwards to accentuate the lavishly veneered and varnished fore deck, fit a generous rubbing strake around the top to bulk this out a bit. Fit some nifty fins (you are planning this anyway of course).

Some exhausts or other metalwork (Like the slo-mo) at the stern might also look trick..as would a full width go-faster wossisname shelf to effectively lengthen the hull and shift the c of g rearwards..as no doubt this hull is relatively nose heavy.

                                      Ashley (pimp my boat)

                                        Thank you Ashley

I need to widen the top deck a little to accommodate the cockpit and a chunky rubbing strip with be a nice solution to the problem

The hull will be quite a bit longer by the time the rudder extensions are fitted.

All will be revealed in good time

Card board cutout to get the proportions right

If you fancy making an Ellie, it`s a good idea to build the hull then do a card cutout of your proposed superstructure

                                              Good morning Bob ,

hope you are well , been looking at your latest build not at all that top suits this type of hull

though very well built to me it looks like a supped up thames lighter,

i would put a bit more flair in the bow bit , and a longer fore deck ,

but its your baby so watching with interest, have fun wish you and yours a Happy Christmas

Bob. Yes like the mockup bits, still think the cockpit needs to come back a bit (personal opinion).

When at the RAF MUseum at Hendon the other day the thing that struck me was the red anti fouling line was sloped from low at the front to high at the rear..the smaller rescue boat next to it had a parallel-to-the-deck line.

I am thinking a bit of crafty painting could well give the hull extra shape..flare or what have you?
