I can foresee two problems: the first is as you said is the 20deg pitch which will throw the clamp force off centre and the second is how to remove the firmly fixed temporary blocks without damaging the skin.

Hi Paul&Bob Following your blog cant help offering a simple solution to the retaining the Blocks As a wood turner I had a problem holding a thin piece of wood in a chuck . Answer place a saraficial piece in the chuck ,face it off and then use PAPER STUCK TO THE BOTH pieces of paper leave to set .Turn the piece and then Tip off the turned piece ,dampen the piece ,clean up job done So stick newspaper to wood glue block to paper leave to set then squeeze together .Enjoying the Blog Michaelwink

          Thank you, Mike

Can't see how your suggestion will work in my case?

We are pleased you are enjoying the thread, thank you

            Bob

I can see what Mike is suggesting and it has to do with my comment of how would you remove the temporary blocks without damaging the skin.

It hadn't occurred to me that if you used a non waterproof glue on the blocks then it would be an easy matter to remove them by simply soaking the area.

The paper membrane that Mike is advocating would make the application of water easier as the paper will act like a sponge and absorb the water quickly and deliver it to exactly where it is required.

Mike has come up with a very clever solution to a problem and should be applauded for his inventiveness.

              Thank you Paul and Mike

It may be possible to screw the blocks on, into thickish wood on the inside?

Then they would easy to remove

The beauty of having the strips, they would prevent the ply from cockling too?

Today, I intend to glue the skin to the frame and mess about with the bows section later and at least, the position of the skin would be a known quantity!

                Halfway there!

Glued the skin on as far as the bendy bit and the prow joint looks more achieveable now with the hull on it`s side………As mentioned earlier by the Chief Designer!

Don`t think we are ready for the Haydock Show now, but will put it in the boot, for viewing by selective audience!……….If I can find him! I need to look out for a blue Rolls Royce or similar?

I wont be going in the Roller as it takes up to much space in the car park besides it would look cheap next to Mr Freshneys new model.

Before now my answer to this tricky bow problem has been to use 5 min epoxy, butter everything up, and hold in position for 5 mins !! Not very scientific, but clamping bow pieces together has to be one of the most tricky things to effect.

Nornally I use thinner stuff than this, and in which case superglue is a godsend. It penetrates the wood (answering questions of "just glue" to hold it all together) on both parts and obv sets within a minute or so. Wearing pvc or other gloves to be safe while holding, either someone else can glue or a generous measute of sg can be applied and then the parts held together.

I don't like super glue because of a nasty experience of coming across some in a hand cream jar.

Still enjoying the thread. Whenever I have had to glue skins on, I have used brass flat headed pins as well as glue- old style. These sand down perfectly with the skin and are invisible under a painted finish- the only time you couldn't do this is with a bright finish- and I've never had the courage to do one of those. Saves a lot of clamping and it's quite fun to do as long as you pre-drill pilot holes!

                        All the best,

                        Ian

                          Welcome back, Ashley………Been away?

I also don`t like Superglue as in never seems to work in emergencies!…..But……

By laying the hull on it`s side, I have managed to tame the Blighter!

Forced it down on a bed of P38………The Lockheed Lightning has saved the day!

                          This!……..Was our finest hour

Bob. Yes, been away. Have been following the thread, have not been posting as there have been plenty of comments on it, without just saying "ooh that looks good Bob" (which it does). Pleased to see some mods taking place. CAd drawing is all very well but there is nothing like seeing the animal in the flesh as it were.

There have been many times when I have drawn details on my builds, but when the time actually comes and you see the bits of wood you realise that your first idea isnt neccessarily the way to go.

Bow clamping is the case in point. Every model will be different and require a different technique.

Excellent joint on the bow. Do I detect some deft fettling going on?? Your use of p38 to bed this joint on is something to be borne in mind. I have found sometimes that p38 or similar is actually a very good glue in itself, and not only that..but obviously a great gap filler.

That P38 is good stuff, but the dust is ghastly!……..And where`s the mask when one needs it?

I came downstairs after a good sanding session and was talking like Donald Duck!

The hull is shaping up now, but again, it`s……Into the breach once more, dear friends!…….Got the bottom skins to wrestle with!

No doubt, I`ll get some expert advice from Red Leader tomorrow at Haydock?

We went to the Haydock Park show today, and we were very impressed by the exquisite poshness of the place! Very spacious, with the show spread over many nice halls

The food counters looked very inviting……..Had a bacon buttie with brown sauce!

The club stands were nice arranged and some of the models were built to such high quality, they were beyond words!………So I`m saying nowt

The bad news is that Red Leader Paul failed to materialise!………No doubt he has good reason?

                                Took a few pictures………….

The Etherow club stand was nicely laid out and displayed, but there was no room at the inn for little Ellie………..Awe!

But they found us a quiet corner, close by, for public examination

Actually, they were two club cronies!

A suitable placard explained the curious exhibit in the corner

Met quite a few lurkers walking about, some quite noteable, who had been following the thread

A nice day out, but is was a pity the team didn`t meet up……..All the best, Paul

I arrived at 10.30 and traversed the length and breadth of all the rooms but didn't see you either, had a very nice chat with chap on the Components stand who did me a great deal on a pair of motors and then had a good long look at your club stand (I liked the complicated radio set with the Sea Queen) but didn't see any of your models.

I walked all the way back to the start and even went outside when the hovercraft were running around.

By 1.30 I was bushed so I decided to call it a day but when back in the car I drove around the car park looking for a camper or a Ventura with a part built model in the back.

I enjoyed the event but found the rooms to dark for my liking and they had stopped doing bacon butties when I went for a coffee.

We arrived at 9.30 hoping you we're in the car park, we did spot a blue van that you described, but no driver

Pity you didn't see Ellie in the corner though!

My wife saw a blue van searching the car park, round about….1.30 and said you spotted her?…In our blue Vauxhall Estate

                                      Better luck next time?

Not surprised you didn't find us…..The place is huge!

I did drive around the car park but whilst mine was the only Blue Trooper there were quite a few Vauxhall estate cars and by then I was tired so I came home.

                                                Hello Bob

Re Extra Holes in Frame 6: The rudder servo and linkages all sit in the rear compartment between Frame 6 and the transom. The existing hole in Frame 6 is for the servo plug.electrical cross section.jpg

As for the cute holes in the bow whilst they might have helped with clamping during the build unfortunately they will now allow any flood water to enter the lower compartment which would be very difficult to remove. Also I had hoped to use this sealed chamber as a floatation / buoyancy aid in the event of capsize or sinking but if you consider the holes to be more valuable as clamping restraints then we will keep them.

                                                  Hello Paul

I prefer the holes option, they are very handy for clampimg the skins, the holes could easily be covered over later, if required, but I prefer to use a small plastic milk bottle as a floatation aid anyway

I also prefer the rudder servo push rods to be longer, so I`ll add the hole anyway in Former 6….Just in case

Managed to glue the first of the two bottom skins in place quite easily…….Photo to follow shortly

                                                    Hi Bob

There is plenty of room inside the model so the builder is able to change or modify equipment choice to suit themselves, there is even room to fit a pair of nice nitro engines.

The same applies to floatation devices as some prefer polystyrene whilst others, like yourself opt for plastic bottles.

None of this is a problem as the basic design is large enough for the builder to be flexible without compromising the structure.

Chaps. In my day, I would arrive at a large venue and tie my string on to a pole and label it "Ashley".. If anyone wanted to find or contact me, they would tie their string to mine and we would speak..although it would depend if the were using CADBURY co-coa tins as to whether the volume would be sufficient or if using an inferior tin it may be a bit quiet.

Nowadays, we would use a MOBILE PHONE but woteva. Shouting has it place as well.

                                                      cool.
