      Hi,

Whats the best thing to use to seal the prop shaft to the hull bottom? i need something which is going to be easy to sand and dress for painting but also has to be 100% water tight.

          Hi Dan

How’s life with the big pipes??

For fixing and sealing propshafts to the hull try 2 pack epoxy glue

I use 2-pack for actually fixing the shaft in, and p38 OR knifing putty to get a smooth finish after. If the slot you cut is tight, with a bit of care you can run 2-pack close to the shaft of the outside and get a nice smooth curved junction between the shaft and hull. I normally cut massive holes being clumsy, but after you have applied p38…who is to know?     Bit of a bugger setting three shafts in the Turbinia, as they are not in the same plane and at different angles. I made the holes much larger to give me manoevering space, and in this instance I held the shafts in place with spots of superglue before fibreglassing them in from the inside and p38-ing them outside.    Ashley

Ok thanks guys, thats given me some food for thought.

Hi paul, the big pipe is only a 24" pipe. not that big but big enough. just sitting off the coast of southern spain (almeria) at the moment doing a short lay of approx 35km which should take 2 weeks. we finished our work in algeria about 4 days ago. then when we have finshed the 35km lay, we go back into almeria port to finish repairs to longer lengths of pipes (for another vessel to lay) and then into a period of maintenance until october when we fire up again and start 2 pipelines to ibiza, sadly out of the partying season then

I plan to set up a website about my trent build aswell, something resembling phil locke’s website and terry small’s build guide on here. i will let you know when this takes shape. i will create another thread aswell soon listing my intended electronics etc and maybe somebody could enlighten me on how to rig it up (ive never tackled something this complicated before) but as a hint, its got remote control nav lights, radar, variable engine noise linked to esc x 2, variable water output through exhausts x 2, maybe a remote control horn, possibly smoke outout through exhausts x 2…… now for those that have fallen off their chair i apologise but i’m spending a lot of money on this so i want it perfect! oh yeah and i’ll be purchasing a robbe/futaba f-14 navy, pricey i know but its what i want…

                    Hi Dan

"only 24in" I wouldn’t like to put a thread on it

The website sounds like a great idea even though if I had one when I was building my Trent the viewers would have been treated to some sad sights of a grown man crying in frustration

Keep warm as I know how cold it can get out there especially at noon……
