      Thanks Larry

Your rigging looks very nice indeed

Your stuff looks a lot stronger than mine, so I`ll give it a try

Ah yes, Bead shops….great places for rigging and other materials!!

Made a great wood-block beater some time ago by using a very hard hardwood bead drilled (carefully) and glued on to a chopstick.

Hi Bob this is all looking great so far! mind you I expect little less from a master such as yourself cheeky

Now I my have missed this point being made earlier in the thread but referring back to the discussion about the similarity to this and the paddle tug that Larry found the photo's of, surely the semicircular piece aft of the stack looks like the support for a tow hook, so adding weight to the argument that this is indeed modelled on a paddle tug

          Just my 2p worth

Hello Phil……..Thank you for those kind words

I read somewhere that the Glasgow was almost a direct copy of the freeplan….Strongbow

I would guess that Strongbow was a copy of a real paddle tug

              railings.jpg

Handrails look nice when assembled properly, but are quite tricky to get right!

I`m at the stage where the stantions require hammering in like nails!….Not very precise

I need a Ureka Moment………..You can`t beat nuts and bolts and a spanner

                Hi Bob,

can you tell me please where do you get your crew figures from?

                Cheers, Terry.

                  Hello Terry

The maker of my crew men has ceased trading now, but you can see a good selection of similar at the Boat Shows…….Blackpoll and Warwick for instance

I think they are 1/35 scale and there are plenty of Airfix soldiers at this scale, which could be used at a pinch?

                    rail-2.jpg

The first railing was a bit of a shambles, I bent two beautiful precise rails only to discover that the stantions wouldn`t go round the bends! A fine start, but got them sorted!

Going to leave the brass parts unpainted for the time being.

                      Bob,

when making your rails do you make them on a template derived off the plan, or do you, like me, build them up direct on the model – including the final dabs of soft solder.

I too, with the rails on "Celestine" found that the stanchions wouldn't go round the right angle corners. To start I cut and soldered, then found that if I counted the stanchions on the lengths, and checked Before bending, I could then do the rails in long lengths.

I made them for a card model kit at 1/100 scale – but I used a former for that job.

You are really pressing on with the build, you'll have time for another before Christmas!

                      Kim.

We may not be saying much Bob but the numbers speak for themselves. I for one thoroughly enjoy your build logs and, if I may say so without sounding too obsequious, find your standard of work an inspiration.

Can't wait to see some pictures of your paddle tug in action…crack on!

                        All the best…Ian

                          Kim

In the case of Glasgow, the stanchions are premarked on the plywood deck. so I use the marks to bend the railings. I make the first bend with pliers, making sure it is dead square, then I slide on the required number of stantions.

I lay the railing flat on the deck, with the wire dead in line with the stantion dots and using a pair of flat nosed pliers, I grip the wire in the precise position, at the tip of the pliers and bend it at right angles….Having said a little prayer beforehand!

As I progress, I always make sure the angles are square and flat

I drilled the deck for the stantions and assembled the railings in position

Using lengths of brass bar as weights, threaded across the rails, to hold them in place, while the joints were superglued in position a few stantions at a time

It's a painfully slow process, but worth it in the end, if one has done a good job

                          Bob

I had to amputate the Skipper`s feet to get him to fit the control cabin!

Wonder why all model crew members are all the same height?

Bob, thanks for the up on your railings, small dabs of guperglue – might try that, its got advantages over using a soldering iron and trying to control the "small" blob of run away solder!

I like the effect of brass and the grey.

And yes, all the commercial figures seem identical heights – even when I got a job lot of 500 @ 1/100 – only the children were a bit smaller, every one else was exactly the same height.

I'm envious of your skills too…

Hopefully my nice new workshop (Small but cosy, fully insulated and heated) will be ready before the really nasty weather sets in as I've got one of my own designs to have ready for next easter, a slightly futuristic take on the MTB wink

Just out of interest Bob ,are you going to leave the brass as a brass finish, and if so how will you keep it shiny? I found that Humbrol GlossCote works well as a lacquer- I did the portholes on my Silver Mist over a year ago and they still look good.

I may leave it and when it dulls it would be just right for painting?

Working on the paddle boxes at the moment, but it looks as though the deck needs to be glued in place first, to get the deck and sponson heights finalised

Also looking at that great white boring featureless hull!

Will have to plate it somehow, but those curves look a bit tricky for card?
