      Bob

If someone with your knowledge and experience has difficulty understanding the designers intent then how do they expect beginners to cope with anything harder than opening the box.

I wonder how many part built kits are skulking in lofts and on top of wardrobes simply because of poorly drawn plans.

        Quite right Paul

But half the problems could be down to me………The instructions are printed to small for comfort, so they only get read when a snag crops up!

The plans could be better. I`m surprised a Glasgow builder has not commented during the build?

Just tried the fancy glue strength and it just popped apart!…….Some glue eh?

I suppose by keeping the sponson supports in tension……..It helped to break the glue bond

Note the two empty milk bottles in the forward compartment, these are a present for Davy Jones!

Not very exciting….No disasters…..No snags…..Nowt to moan about for a change!

For the benefit of the non Northerners….."Nowt"……….Means ……"Nothing"……….lol

The deck is glued in and hatch coaming fitted. The model feels nice and solid now

                    Hello Phil

When I said the gussets will be tricky, I was referring to the trickyness of painting them nicely, without dawbing the deck!

I could have painted the outer edge but the plank lines are cut into the surface and could bleed?

Is there nowt simple these days?

                        Fitting the handrails

To ensure that the rails lie correctly on the top of the bulwalks, weights are placed across both rails

I`ve abraided the top edges and using PVA glue and will have several coats of varnish

The tricky part now are the bulwalk gussets………Painting thereof!

I really need a matching green edge, but the deck has deep grooves as planking joints and the paint might bleed through. The gussets need to be green for appearance

H Bob.I have been designing and building RC yachts for the past 5 years. After two recent windless weeks spent on the Norfolk Broad’s I decided I needed something with a motor. I chose Glasgow as it looked a bit different. I intended to do a straight forward build exactly as the instructions (I enlarged them on a photocopier), but reading your excellent build forum has shamed me into trying to make it more interesting. I going to try plating it but I think I will stick to a civilian colour scheme.

I have got as far as fitting the drive, radio gear and deck. I’m trying to pluck up the courage to start on the paddle box decks…… the positioning of the supporting beams on the sides is giving me a headache but I suppose I will manage to work it out.

I’m really pleased that I found your forum. Your photos, comments and advice are a great help and are giving me a bit more confidence.

                              Hello John

Welcome aboard!………The sponsons are easy to build, but be very careful when it comes to glueing them in position to the hull. I got mine slightly wrong, by being a bit low.

There doesn't seem to be an accurate logical method of doing this?……Unless it is in the small print?

I would suggest that you build the sponsons as per the plan, including the split joint and study the situation carefully. Fit the paddles to the shaft and offer the sponsons to the hull.

I would position the hull on a flat surface, with access all round and make suitable tempory supports, until you are confident with the setup

Also the paddle boxes need to be considered too, in the equation

Don't rush it, as this is quite a tricky but important part of the build!

Feel free to ask as many questions as you like

Post a few photos of your build, please?

Working on the paddle boxes now. They feel very flimsy and need beefing up, in my opinion

Added a beam across the rear edge and filled in the rear box area

Hoping to retain the box with a single screw. Tube for same is glued in at top and bottom for strength

                                padd under.jpg

Note the back wall of the box will be on the outside of hull…….Not as kit instructions

                                fan holes.jpg

Vent holes changed to the traditional fan shape, starting with the drilled holes at each end of fan

Bob, those paddle boxes look very impressive. I have thought about removing the 'stick-ons' off mine and cutting them out, but somehow there always seem something else more urgent.

I think the original kit supplied pattern resembles the Manchester Ship Canal paddle tug Reliant.

I`ve invented the fan shape myself……..Based on previous paddleboats
