For straight cutting, you need a deepish  (12mm )  fresh coarse blade and a suitable side guide. The blade guides should be very close to the blade on either side and the minimum amount of blade exposed.

My bandsaw is the old Burgess type and can cut 8`-0″ planks of 3mm x 10mm with ease

Can you describe how your bandsaws behave on straightline cutting?

Mine wanders all over the place and its set up correctly with the throat reduced to almost the top of the work piece.
The blades on these machines are only 6mm deep.

My Proops cheapo wood-chopper arrived today and works like a dream. Spent a happy hour reducing three feet obechi strips to 180mm deck planks – perfect cut every time, and a simple jig means they are all spot on!
