If you build 'plank on frame', it depends on whether you wish to keep detail of the planking, I didn't use resin on the outside of my trawler hull, as it is 'carvel or flush planked' & a fine sand plus 4 coats (thin) of Humbrol enamel gave it a good seal.

However, if you are planking in the 'clinker' style, you wouldn't want to detract from the effect by using resin on the outside either.

These are just my views, I'm quite new to this hobby, so err to the more experienced on here.

              Hi Andrew

For the fast removal of wood and filler I use a small surform, its possibly the best little hand tool that I have ever used **LINK** look on fleabay for some good deals.

For sanding large areas I invested in a cheap detail sander (like this one) **LINK** these machines use hook and eye sanding pads which come in lots of different grit sizes and, if you shop around, are cheap as chips…I recently bought a load from Lidl (a box of 25 for £2)

For treating the inside of your model you could use yacht varnish, fiberglass resin or a good thick commercial undercoat.

              Paul

Hi all my name is Martin and I live in Crawley West Sussex, I'm new to boat building but I have been building model air craft for about 5 years. Is there any member out there who would like to be a friend in my friend box to help me. and can any one tell me where to get a good plan and build log's. Thanks all thumbs up

                    Hi Martin

It depends a lot on what you want to build. You could go with a plan from Paul for an "Elliie" hull. this uses thae same hull to build 3 different boats. See the Ellie thread, a quick search will find it. Paul built the Fast Patrol version and I think it was Dave who built the other one. Might be wrong there though, open to correction guys. Or pick up a back copy of the Magazine with a free plan and I also contains a build log. A search through the back issues section should see you right.

Also might be worth starting a new thread, hat way we can keep your questions separate from Andrew's and less confusing.

                    Regards

                    Andy

Hi everyone, I am new to the model boat building game. I once had a man build me the shamrock patrol craft 1/24 scale. He done alright and was very expensive to pay. It needs a bit of maintenance now and going about materials at moment. I am looking for someone's help on what fuse I should use in the electrics. I don't have the old one as its gone from the connection lead between the speed controller and motor. Am I right to use a 5 amp clear glass? I think this was the fuse size that blew , a long time ago. All equipment was the standard electrics for the running of this model….I need some help also on the size of propeller I need to use…lost the old 1…it was a plastic propeller and fell off I think in reverse , never recovered it in the lake and was lucky to retrieve the model back. Please can someone help me …would love to get it up and going again with out any problems please please.indecision

A photograph or two of the electrics inside the model, along with any identifying names of the various units (speed controller, motor) would be useful. A 5A fuse would be way too small if you fitted a standard 540 motor, and I don't recommend glass fuses for high currents as the connections inside the sprung holders are poor and can overheat. This is more what you need **LINK** as it takes standard auto blade fuses (15A would be a good value to start with).
BTW I designed the Shamrock about 20 years ago.
