      Fair comment Colin.

To be honest it was a bit unfair of my to have asked the question.

I will shut up now, I have some new plans to study I hope wink

As a current moderator of the Mayhem forum I can only endorse Colin's comments. There have been instances of poor customer service posted on Mayhem, and some of these have been allowed to stand. However, it has often been necessary to lock the topic for reasons that Colin mentioned, that is, the discussion has degenerated into a slanging match. The lines between truth and fiction sometimes become blurred, so the moderating team may decide that no useful purpose is served by allowing the discussion to continue, so the topic is locked, and overtly derogatory or inflammatory posts removed.

Dave, I don't believe that it was unfair of you to ask the question, as I think it was a valid one. I hope the explanations given are satisfactory.

        Peter.

          Peter,

I do understand the reasons given thanks.

I meant unfair to ask of Colin. It should really be directed at the publishers.

          Thanks again

As Peter says, It was a fair point to raise – but we live in an imperfect world! At least this is an opportunity to inform people of the issues and potential consequences.

I think the reality is that consistently under performing traders will quickly go out of business. Manipulative customers will always be with us but thankfully they are in a very, very small minority.

Over most of a lifetime I have found model boaters to be among the best and most honest people you could possibly wish to meet.

has it not been the case in the past where Forums which have allowed comments about traders these forums have also come threat from legal sources for allowing such posts ?, one of the main reasons why Martin does not really allow negative comments ?.

The reasons that Mayhem and indeed other Forums do not host critical posts are as described above. Traders would be entitled to ask for negative posts to be taken down if they cannot be substantiated which is often (in the legal sense) the case. To answer your question I'm afraid you would have to ask Martin as it is not something in which the Model Boats Forum has any involvement.

If people on this Forum wish to complain then I refer them to the appropriate MyTimeMedia departmental contact and I think it is fair to say that in most cases a satisfactory resolution results. There are of course instances where a complainant may disagree with MTM policy which is their personal opinion. In such cases we may just have to agree to differ.

Incidentally, while at the Warwick show today one of the traders quoted an example whereby a prospective customer had gone on line to make strong accusations that the trader never responded to phone calls. It turned out that the person concerned had not left their own number. Believe it or not as you wish!

Looks like poor old Martin is having another serious problem with the Mayhem forum. It's been offline since first thing yesterday morning. There are some real numpties on there these days but I do hope he can recover it for those who aren't!

The most annoying thing is that Mayhem 'fell over' while I was doing the backup!!!

We're trying a few things to fix before our fallback of a full restore from last week.

                                Martin dont know

It's not looking good. I'd go for the Plan B backup copy – most of the stuff in the last week has been speculation about the lost airliner anyway.

The website was up yesterday but now the server is unavailable. On this occasion hoping things will sort themselves out doesn't appear to be working very well. I think a wholesale change in software and service provider might be the best solution, Martin.

Well, it's back up again now (Saturday29th 6pm). Obviously Martin is having some problems.

There are all sorts of reasons why a website can go down. It's not an easy job maintaining a hobby Forum if you don't have commercial muscle behind you. People do tend to take you for granted until something falls over which is perhaps a bit unfair. There is a facility on Mayhem for making contributions to its upkeep and the stronger the financial position, the more secure it will be.

Whether or not Mayhem is the Forum for you, Martin continues to invest a lot of his own money in keeping it up and running and if members value the site then it's really up to them to do their bit too. Nothing comes for free in reality although many internet users overlook this simple fact.

It seems that the fault was a simple one, but it took a lot of work to find that it was largely due to an incorrect database file extension name. Thankfully some Mayhem members are IT gurus, and helped Martin track the problem down and fix it.

As Colin pointed out, the site is run mainly at Martin's expense, both of money and time, and when a problem does occur it takes time to fix it. Time can be a problem as Martin does have a job which takes priority, as well as a family, who at times must be sick of the word "Mayhem". He has been assisted on the financial side by some advertising revenue as well as donations from members, but I am fairly sure his expenses are not completely covered, and the drain on his own pocket would be significant.

                                                  Peter.
