I am at the stage where i need to start addressing the way I need to cover or leave the lifeboats open.
From the kit perspective the both are shown.
I have absolutely no idea of how to cover the lifeboat, I thought of doping/painting calico cotton sheeting but how do you get to get the hardened material to follow the outline, also the tie offs.
I have not seen this process described any where do date.

      Please advise.
      Desperate!

If you have the May issue of Model Boats there is an excellent article by Richard Simpson on constructing and fitting out a clinker built lifeboat for his Mountfleet “Ben Ain” kit. Showing the interior detail of the boats is an attractive option even if it does mean a bit more work.

As for the canvass cover, I use single ply toilet paper, painted to the colour you want and left to dry. It can then be folded up and dropped in the bottom of the boat with a coat of matt varnish…..Works for me anyway!!

Sorry about the poor photo. I tried to upload some better ones, but the site said it had a problem…..I do have plenty if you want to see them!!

I have tried tissue paper doped and then painted this afternoon and am not impressed.
I have seen many very neat jobs in the magazines etc I must be missing something here?

Thanks for trying Barry, nice model!
The lifeboat I wanted to cover was the whole top almost as per your deck cover as per your photo.
How did you do this cover maybe that will help?

                  Hi Colin,
The mag is in the library of our club so will have a look when next there.
                  Thanks for the info.

                    Kevin,
If you mean the large hatch, I did it by painting the single ply tissue paper and when dry, positioning it over the hatch, pulling and pushing it to get a tight finish. Once in place this was then matt varnished and then finished with a weathering technique to age it. A final coat of varnish sealed it all in.
                    Hope this helps..
PS..I don’t think dope on the tissue before painting will be of any use. Just paint it. You want a tissue of the thickness of single ply toilet or kitchen tissue to start with.
