OK Im attempting to learn how to weather a model. My question at the moment is how do I apply “rust”? Do I apply it as a wash or drybrush?Or a mixture of the 2 dependant where it is?
And any tips on getting a reasonably good rust colour?

          Hello Antony

You can see my efforts at rusting ……….on my Great Eastern  and Jeanie Deans at war albums………………I use artists acrylic paint…Burnt sienna…..yellow ochre and raw umber

You will also need to add plenty of dirt……………in all corners and cracks and around all deck fittings

Always paint the rust in vertical streaks from the anchor ports etc and along plate joints etc and use a variety of colours

Post us a picture when you`ve done it?

              Be green. Rust is natural.

Ok Ive taken the plunge on attempting to weather this Uboat. Ive put a couple of pics up in the albums. Is it over the top? Or am I on the right lines?

I think that weathering is a personal taste thing, and as such i would never comment on it.

                                  Hello Tony

I am with Ashley on this subject as I think that for a model to look like the full size version then it shoul look as though it has just left the builders yard, all clean, bright and shining.

But beauty is in the eye of the beholder and your UBoat is a first class build.

                                      Dear All
It must take hours for the accurate modeller to re-create all of the rust marks and detritus that are prevalent on so many full size ships and I acknowledge the skill involved in working at this level of detail.

My personal opinion is that the masters / owners of the full size ships are just lazy in allowing their vessels to get into such a state in the first place; to me it just emphasizes a lack of maintenance which must also extend to other aspects of the ship such as engines and navigation equipment.

But as I said this is just my opinion.

                                      Paul

Thanks guys for the comments. Ive never attempted weathering before but Ive always admired those who do. Its not for everyone and I admit to liking both the rusty old buckets as well as the pristine spotless models. It is just a matter of taste but Im happy with what Ive achieved for a first effort.
