I agree with your assertion of my 20:20 hindsight and with this in mind I must disagree with your offhanded 'easy mistake to make' comment as the intellectual amongst us would have at least considered the possibility that Quentin could live in the country that has the worlds second largest land mass.

The joy of retirement and being full of pills is that I can tiptoe around lots of projects without feeling the slightest pang of guilt or urge to finish them off.

Given that the allocated radio frequencies in the USA and Canada are very different it might perhaps have been useful (and less wasteful of my time and that of Mattias) had the word "Canada" been mentioned at the outset – not that Quentin could be held in any way culpable. As it is, to use this simple omission and my not-unreasonable consequential assumption as a "yah boo, sucks to you" opportunity is beneath you.

Help? I shall be a lot more careful in future.

Yes you are right and it is beneath me but the schoolboy in me just couldn't resist the extremely rare opportunity to rib the master.

Now then how did a simple question end up in recriminations ?. Simple answer is buy one of those new fangled radio sets and be dammed with the expense for less than £50

WE all know you can buy a Spectrum set for under £80 unless you need a 14 channel thingylaughMichael

When I joined up a few days ago I had made an assumption that my byline of "Newbie Prairie Canuck" would be displayed and give people an idea of who I was. Once my avatar gets approved and posted it'll be another give away.

Quentin wishes to operate RC submarines, Mike, and 2G4 signals won't travel through water.

Just had a note from Malcolm Frary who makes a good point. With people converting radios to 2G4 there may well be some redundant 75MHz modules and receivers lying unused. Might be worth a trawl through some of the North American RC websites/forums.

Thanks for the advice guys. I've being trawling a lot. I should build one.

So far radios on the market are only 2 and 3 channel. A number are AM and / or 27MHz which is not good enough. Dynamic diving subs need a bare minimum of 3. If you add a ballast tank then your up to 4. Of course with a few more bells and whistles added you could be 5 channels and above.

I'm the type of guy that doesn't like to buy the bare minimum. I would like to be able to expand functions. Already with my springer kit build I have nav, running and spot lights. There is also a sound module I can get at a discount. My second build I have planned is for twin motors with independent throttle control. So even on the surface I will be needing at least 5 channels.

Because of what I learned on the forum, another option is to find a radio like a Futaba 9C. Many were converted to 2.4GHz because the 72 or 75 MHz crystal and the Tx module were one unit that could be easily removed and swapped for another channel.

Futaba USA Service Dept apparently can take a module and recalibrate it to a 75MHz. Reality is that the air ruled back then with 72MHz.

                    Cheers

Anyone had any experience with this radio?

It's cheap, and looks like a pretty close replacement for the Graupner MC 16/20…

I wonder what else you have to buy to connect to the Rx in order to get all of those 16 channels working, but it certainly does seem to tick a few of the much-missed Robbe-Futaba FC16/Graupner MC16 boxes.

I'll let Steve Dean buy one first!

I've looked, and can't find any requirement to buy any more! The Tx has 6 pot knobs as well as the usual 4 stick channels, so it looks as if it has at least 10 fully proportional functions. No good for submarines at 2.4Ghz, but it's not a bad price for such a specialist item… and voice/bluetooth as well!

It seems that the Tx provides 8 channels if used with a D8 receiver, 12 if used with an LR12 receiver, and the full 16 if used with a D16 receiver.  There are 8 switches in addition to the 10 proportional functions, typically 3-position, which can all be defined in the mixer menu, and an extra DIY switch port which allows you to extend the number of switches.

                          Could be good for battleships?

Seems to have a following with five and rotor pilots here in North America. I just surfed some forums and blogs.

I read some retailers and definitely 16 channels with base TX. It can be expanded to 32 channels. You might switch from a battleship to an Aegis cruiser.

The software is open source, so you sb able to find help re programming.

This still doesn't help submariners, of course. I'm wondering about one myself. But, as has been pointed out above, you need several channels, and the old cheap low-frequency radios you get on ebay are typically 2-channel.

Has anyone got any recommendations for a good submariner set to look for in the UK? Either 27Mhz or 40Mhz?
