Thanks, Dave. The filler is called One Strike Ready Mixed Filler and the number in the Toolstation catalogue is 20822 on page 34.

That's just the job – and very reasonable, too!

Still progressing slowly – at my age nothing happens very fastsmiley. Chine rails fitted, which was not too difficult. Motor and propshaft tube fitted as a dummy run to make sure everything lines up correctly before gluing into place. The silvery item sitting on the hull is a large plastic spoon/scoop that I bought on eBay and hope to cut down and form to the near correct size/shape for the air intake scoops on the superstructure sides – obviously if this works, I will have to buy another one but the are not expensive.

A real problem I have now is how to cut the 10mm x 5mm bass strips down to a triangular section to make up the spray rails for the bottom of the hull and I would be more than happy to receive some suggestions. I have tried running them through my bandsaw with the table set at the appropriate angle. It seemed to run okay for a few inches and then ran out so that I ended up with 2 unusable length of strip. I then tried planing to shape but was only mildly successful and, bearing in mind that there are 8 of these rails, it was too time consuming, rather inaccurate and rather difficult to get anywhere near right.

          Derek.

Hi Derek, How about 2 pieces of your 10x5mm strip glued together to form a vee, one side will be 10mm and the other will be 5mm inside the vee, put a stop at the end to stop the piece you are working on from slipping out you then have something to stop the strip from moving under the plane and a bit more to hold on to, you then plane down to the top corners of the vee.

            Hope all this makes sense.

            Regards Eddie.

Glad you raised this Derek as that's something I've been thinking about and I'm nowhere near that stage yet and mine will be smaller so even more of a challenge!

Dave will be along to enlighten us in due course.

              Chris

PS. I wonder if SLEC would supply some!

I used a David razor plane and a bucket of filler! I made a holding jig very much as described by Eddie, too. As I wrote, who said this was a beginner's model anyway?

If you don't fancy the whole idea then just glue some 3/32" x 3/32" bass strips* flat onto the hull and then sand them to a half-round D section when set. I doubt if the shape will make much of a difference to the performance at this scale. It's getting the chine rails correct which is the main thing.

                *Derek – read 3/16" x 1/8" for your model.

                  Thanks Eddie,

I have tried something similar to your idea but it is so time consuming that I gave up on it because my right arm would have given out long before I got anywhere near the 8 pieces required.

                  Chris,

I asked Slec if they could machine them to shape for me when I bought them from their factory but they said that they were unable – don't know whether it would be worth approaching them again.

                  Derek.

I have now got an email to tell me that Dave M has also replied whilst I was typing this – thanks for that Dave. Other thoughts are going through my mind all the time (the problem is managing to stop them before they disappear again) but one idea would be to use the appropriate sizes of bass strip to make up 'L' sections, glue them to the hull and then there would only be the edges to sand off and then fill the inner section of the 'L' with a lightweight filler. Would it work???????????

                  Derek.

I have a brilliant razor plane which I bought at a ME Exhibition many years ago when the French manufacturer was having a stand at the shows. It is called a Rabot Kid 40 and it was rather expensive but it came in a strong plastic box with all the various fittings. It can be found on youtube and this is a link to their website – http://www.rabotkid.com/en/reception%20%20kid%2024%20plane.aspx – but I don't think that they do that particular model any more – pity, as I think that they were worth every penny (or should that have been Frank – pre Euro !).

If anyone is interested there is a Rabot plane on eBay, due to end in less than 48 hours – https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rabot-Kid-20-plane-system/173154107638?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649 . It is shown as a Kid 20 but I am sure it is the same as mine.

                        Hi All

I seen on another forum site one for the members runs the sides past the bottom and trims them with spray rail included.

Small filler back to the bottom, looked very nice finished.

I think you're confusing the spray rails – of which there are four each side of the keel along the bottom of the hull and parallel to the keel – with the chine rails, of which there is just one each side following the line of the chine.

                            My mick steak !!!!

The last lot of spray rails I made were not an easy job !!!

I did not add chine or spray rail to the SG&K Runabout as they had not invented in 1920.
