Oh yes, The servos off the birthday boat survived, but when I plugged the receiver in, the servo's went to full travel and stayed there regardless of stick position. I suspect that may have happened before the reciever got drowned…. (pity it had to be full throttle, not idle…)

HI Amy, very clever idea of splitting the 1/8" ply. At least you know that both sides are identical. As good as CNC machining! Just so you know, Ashley is an expert on "antipodean war canoes" (in case you missed it check out the last entry in Scratch build-Type 7 U Boat-Feb 2014). Keep it in your back pocket that your canoe does actually fly!smiley She looks very sea worthy. Suspect she will be a brilliant model to sail on rough weather days.

            Hi Len,

Thanks for that, Just a pity both sides of the boat weren't the same lol…

Yep, Ian, I have to confess that's exactly what happened…. short attention span, I'm afraid. I really admire you builders that have the patience for all that detail…..

Well I've done a bit more work, although I mislaid my camera, so no photos, sorry. The front windows are done, and the wales are shaped up, ready to glue on. I've finished work for the year now, so the boat will have to wait until I'm back to work in January.

Wishing you all a merry Christmas and happy new year!

Hi all. Back again. Did you miss me? (not).

              Well back at work, boohoo.

The cabin window frames all done, and everything ready for a splash of colour.

                        Hello again

Well, a bit more progress to report.

A strip of ali was glued into a slot cut in the deck, to act as a coaming. The matching slot cut into the under side of the cabin.

                        dscf6392 (640x360).jpg

                        The cabin painted….

                        dscf6394 (640x360).jpg

                        The rudder all connected up.

Making a seal between the cabin and deck is next, then recycle another car battery for a few pounds of lead ballest, possibly a cast shoe along the keel.

AmyJ. Coming along. I know its how it is supposed to be but the rudder looks odd, like something on a dingy.

Its a whopping great rudder mind, should turn on a sixpence/cent/euro/cowrie shell or whatever you use over there.

                            Hi Ashley

                            Good to hear from you.

I never thought of the rudder looking odd, but I guess, with the almost universal in board rudder these days, it would.

In the boats original form as a open sail boat, the stern hung rudder was ideal, cheap simple and easily removed if the boat needed to be hauled up an open beach. With my intended rough water use, a powerful rudder is essential, and yes she should turn on a bit coin!

You have done well with your little dinky model, the method of construction is interesting and should qualifiy you for a place in our Blue Peter children`s programme on the BBC……..Only pulling your leg!

No apologies required, and a very happy new year to you and yours….

Hmmm… you may be on to something, reliving my lost childhood, mayhaps?

As for future projects, I fear the dark side has a hold on me, and is compelling me to build more models of the aeronautical sort……

I do get a lot of pleasure building this crazy giant boat

It is a strange build, full of weird things, like covering the cabins with Fablon!…And not forgetting the oil cloth flooring….and the OTT motor drives….And the built in wheels…..and the size of it ….and covering the hull with paper….etc

Got a long way to go yet too

I know I keep jumping about from this and that….I just do what inspires me at the time

At the moment, I'm looking into wall lighting for the engine room, with signs and fire extinguishers etc

If you get back into the airers, don't forget to keep popping in, for a nosie?

….always happy to poke my nose in…..

A little more progress, just the beginings of a hatch, so the helmsman can poke his head out and bark abuse at his poor wife for not picking the mooring up, all because he came in too fast and at the wrong angle. (Now that's something I see all to often!) The start of a derrick, for to get the dinghy up on deck. (Blast, 'spose I'll have to make a dinghy now…)

                                      smile d @ mooring story

I actually saw something like that years ago… We entered the locks on a Botter – a dutch old sailing fisher boat, approx. 17 metric tonnes of oak wood – and calmly moored this boat.

                                      Behind us a 7m Bayliner, with BOWTRUSTER…no

It took them the full 10 minutes the lock was busy, to get this thing moored – and ended up not succeeding!!! The curses and complaints yelled at each other made one think Watersports were only there to get each other killed, instead of leisure time.

Really, it is gobsmacked to see how bad people can be at steering their boats. Something that seems to be reverse-proportional to the number of aids they have to get their boat in the right position. (I mean, come on. 7m and a bowtruster no, and still not being able to get your boat alongside a quay, where did you ever learn to steer anything?!?smile o)

I am sure the capt'n of your little lovely vessel will be a better helmsman than this Bayliner redneck.

On a side note, I am constantly fooled by the size of the ship, each time you post a photo without reference it looks to me as if it is only 20cm long or so. The ear protection put it back into perspective wink

                                        Hi there Diede.

I see that sort of thing all the time, and you're right. A boat full of gimicks and a "skipper" that aint got a clue!

                                        Here's a doozy for you, and it's God's honour true….

A few years back I was at the helm of a friends 33' yacht. I had just dropped him off at a small rubbish pontoon, and had backed off to allow other craft in while he sorted the recycling. I'd just nosed in to pick him up, when I saw a launch coming into the other side way too fast! I hollered at Les to stay put and hang on tight. I slammed the yacht in full reverse. By this time the launch had hit the pontoon. Les was thrown against the bins and looking over his shoulder must have decided the launch was going to cut the pontoon in half and made a swan dive for our bow rail. Thankfully, I'd just managed to keep the yacht clear, and Les got on board ok. I ended up a bit bruised from where the tiller had slammed me against the cockpit side. The launch and the pontoon where a mess, but not as bad as the "skippers" ears after the tirade he got….Some people just shouldn't be let near a boat….

How's that cruiser of yours coming along?

Cassie has the feel of a very small boat too, although she is 38" long.

I just rummaged through my handbag looking for my camera, but it would seem I've left it at work……..

The derrick is done. The mast passes through the main cabin top, just abaft the windscreen. I've put a round ply disk around the mast at roof level and a headless screw projecting down from the mast step. By screwing the mast down until the ply disk is firmly against the cabin roof, I can both support the mast and press the cabin down on its seal.

So… a couple of pounds of ballast, a few handrails and cleats, a few props to experiment with and she's all go…

Wow Amy Jane, what a story (but alas, only too familiar).

My Sea Princess is in the garage, in primer, as the garage is in no shape to paint her (I have pretty much all my personal belongings, and some family stuff, stored there due to a big addition to the house). So, pretty much all building activities are on a halt right now, until my room and the attic are done.

I am in anticipation of your new pictures, Cassie is coming along nicely!

Hello Ian, thanks for looking in

You're not wrong about the weather, certainly hot and dry down here!

Yeah, I've been playing with the planes quite a bit, well at least when the wind's not blowing!

I had a brief play with a quad copter, assembling one for a friend. Putting it all together was a breeze, but programming the computer board was beyond me….

                                                  Wattle still ticking along?

                                                  Aj

Right, to bring you all up to date..

                                                    Cassie's derrick in action…

                                                    dscf6402 (640x360).jpg

The free standing mast means the load can be picked up from any where and put down any where on the boat.

on a full sized boat I would use a couple of trailer winches to keep the deck clear of rope under foot.

                                                    A few more details….

                                                    mast step screw…

Ballast was required, so another old car battery was put to the saw…

This is about al you get that is worth recycling, the plates aren't worth the bother.

I make the mould out of a bit of ceramic board, hollowed out.

                                                    Crude, but it's only ballast

I have a small furnace I melt the lead in

I originally cast the lead in long strips, for to screw on the keel, but didn't much like it , so re cast to go in the bilge.

                                                    Ballast temporarily in place.

A few props made up, for to see which is best.

Sizes from 40 to 45 mm diameter, and I'll adjust the pitch as I go.

Off to the salt next week, Yay!
