This is my first RC model boat and, having made a couple of Billings static kits I thought I would go for a proper working boat..

The hull construction is going OK at the moment with a few interesting learning exercises but I am quickly realising I need to get the motor and running gear setup sorted now or I will have issues later.

My problem is I really have no idea of what the correct motor /controller set-up for the boat should be? Its a displacement hull so absolute speed is not a key feature but I would like the boat to be controllable at slow speeds and able to reach hull speed. any recommendations as to a suitable low cost rig would be appreciated please.

My current plans are to go for an "MFA 950D 385 Type Motor with Single Ratio Metal Gearbox 2.5:1" – is this a sensible choice oro would this be just too slow for a sensible model.

I would allso appreciate any suggestions as to sensible low cost RC kit as I need to get a complete set-up

      any assistance much appreciated

      Yours

          Hi Chris,

I wouldn't bother with the gearbox on the 385, do they supply a prop & shaft with the kit ??

          Regards Ray

Yep – I'll go along with that, Ray. A 7.2v NiMH pack will produce approx 7000RPM no-load, which should be just the ticket with something like a 35mm 3-blade plastic scale prop. A 10A ESC would be more than enough to cope, but do buy a decent British one like the little MTroniks job. Micro-Viper ESC . You'll be able to find it for less than this price, too – try Howes Models.

              Chris (welcome to the forum!).

A new Planet 2+2 2.4 ghz set would do you. But others have their preferences.

This has go/turn sticks, and two secondary channels if you had any working features.
