      Hi All

      A little more progress

      Wind screen frame made

      dscf5834 (640x480).jpg

A fiddly job, but it didn't turn out all together too bad.

A start made on the helm

      dscf5835 (640x480).jpg

I thought, that seeing it was only for looks, I'd just piece it up, rather than laminating or brick laying.

Has the crew been given further thought yet?? I know what will happen..once the varnish dries and the boat has had a good THRASH in the water, the crew build wil lag and lag ..and the boat will be forever incomplete (sob sob..reaches for hanky)

          A wonderful job, Amy.

Done with that Kiwi spirit I admire so much.

Windscreens…longest winded bit of the job bar none.

This one , which is two nickel silver sheets, fretted out with a piercing saw and soldered together with a 1mm rod spacer and mounting pins, took me three days and that's a long time for me. Then it had to be plated, mounted on a fully varnished deck, glazed with curved panels and the sealing strip put on in 20 thou. square plastic. Finally the wipers were added and the spot light and nav light mounts

! About a week in all.

          Your wooden one looks lovely.

          Cheers,

          Martin

Wow, that's a lovely model, Martin!

Thanks or your kind comments. I found the wind screen quite tricky. This is my first attempt at any thing resembling a "proper" scale model, as opposed to my previous "toy" boats. It's all too easy to underestimate how tricky it all is until you actually try it yourself! I can only stand in awe of how good the workman ship is of the modelers out there.

            Ashley.

Yes, the crew has been thought out. I'm really quite worried about it. I agree that a boat like this demands a crew, But it would seem to me that that is the hardest bit of all to get right! I would sooner put the boat in the water with out, than with a badly done crew. So keep nagging me, but get the hanky ready just in case!!

            Thanks all

I always try to complete the boat fully before plopping in the water, as as soon as it is in and sailing I think.."ah, thats all done then" and all the extras would never get completed.

Exceptions are things which need trials first before goig on, but yours works fine, so…

Martin. Good job with the boat. Windscreen..worth the effort. Static showcase model?

Amy and Ashley, yes the Rivas I did were for owners of the actual boats. They were both statics and each took about 700 hours to do. Each planked in steamed pear (perfect scale mahogany), boxwood and pau rosa with hand painted miniaturists' canvas floor covering, scale Chevy Big Block engines, marinised style, working steering (don't ask) and nickel plated brass fittings. The finish is epoxy resin , then varnished with Epiphanes spar varnish, a la the real boats.

Only the props (Prop Shop l & r hand) and the glasses in the cocktail cabinet were bought in. All badges, etc. were photo-etched from my artwork in those wonderful days when the etchers didn't insist on computer files and a second mortgage! The veneer on the base, when seen from above represents the wake from twin screws.

The boats are shown on scale stillages used for storing the real new boats.

                    Excellent work, Amy J

Your model looks very nice and is full of delightful features

A very special subject, built like the full size equivalent?

Have you found a driver yet?

                      Good Morning Bob.

Thanks for the compliments. Built with a full sized boat in mind, although with a little license taken here and there. (I would never put the gear stick on the steering colum on a full size boat, but thought it would look good on the model)

I shall endeavour to scratch build the crew. (wish me luck…)

Best of luck with your electrical issues, something I know nothing about…

The instrument faces were drawn larger than life, then shrunk down on the photo copier. The aluminium work shop lampshade was attacked with various sized wad punches, to make the benzels.

Sorry AmyJ but I spot a horrible mistake concerning your instruments. Specifically the speedo which ONLY goes up to 35 1/2 knots and the miserably low setting of 3501 RPM on the revcounter… surely insufficient for a boat of this specification.

I suggest that the speed reads AT LEAST 100 knots and a rev limit of 9000 would be more like it.

                          I used to have a 70mph speedo on my 125 BSA bantam….

                          Ashley

ps great woodwork, nice colour, please lie and say there are 20 coats of varnish on these items or Paul T will think you have been skimping on the finish.

                            Hi Ashley.

Yes, I see that I've left a zero off, that should read 350 1/2 knots at 35,010 rpm!

(I'm pretending there is a Packard straight eight under that long engine cover, which I think would make the instruments some where near close?….)

                            It's ok, There's 20 .231 coats of varnish…

                              Hi Amy J.

Those dials look great. it is amazing what some small detail can do to a model. The varnishing job on the small parts is also wonderful. I think Paul would have preferred 21 full coats, but that's OK, 20.231 I am sure will be close enough for us mere mortals.

                              Keep it up.

Well painting, painting, painting! I detest painting, and am not very good at it. But I'm doing my best…My birthday boy may have a big heart, but he also has a big mouth, and lets me know…( He once said to me, "Aj, I really like your models, but the're all too small, slow, and girly for me". So now you know why I'm going over the top on this one! I'll be quite happy to go back to small, slow and girly.) Cheeky blighter, I've a mind to keep the boat and give him a sock for his birthday, in the mouth!

                                      Any ways, here's some piccies…

I am very impressed with your model, you have built it boldly and with confidence from start to finish!

I like the quality of the added extras…..That windscreen must have been a swine to work on, awkward and fiddly too

I like the RH drive too

What about a driver?…..I believe they have some little people in the Isle of Man?

Keep up the good work, AJ

Ashley. It is my plan to make a quarter scale model of my self that will go behind the wheel. I could be the mechanic tinkering with the V12.

Next thing to make has to be a transport box. It is the only way to do it. Since making boxes for most of mine (for the film) I have seen the light. It keeps them safe, it allows easy stacking for storage and also protects them from damage going in and out the car. They do collect spiders though, but a quick puff gets them out post haste.

Hello Mike, thanks for the comments! smiley, you are most kind. No I haven't waxed the wood work, And may I be so immodest to point out that that I also made the varnish as well….(and the royal blue paint too, the rest is commercial).

I can now reveal that the birthdayboy is my husband Sam, But I guess most of you have figured that already.

No I couldn't make a figure of Ashley for the driver, Sam would want to know who the handsome young man was! (Ashley is only 21, he told me himself, yes of course I believe him!)

Com'n guys, I build a boat, then you want a driver, now you want a box! gees…..wink 2
