Looks very nice, Amy….Maybe a little short in proportion? A 12 " rule would be a helpful guide

You could always build a flat stern at the stern, on the waterline or an artistic ambitious bilge keel thing, to keep the keel up

Keep up the good work, Ladies….."You're doing a good job"

        Hello.

I can assure you that the hull will plane nicely, just as it is! The reason that Peter's hull squats is the rocker at the stern. The shape of the buttock lines is very important to a boats speed, even in a displacement hull. Any rocker (curve, or "cut up in the last half of a planing hull's bottom is fatal.

Bob, the photos do foreshorten the hull a bit. (standing on the bench with my head wedged against the ceiling is the only way I can get the whole thing in!) The beam length ratio is 4:1 which is not excessive.

I'm sure that there is someone out there who has done something simmilar, and I would like the benefit of their experience. Am I on the right track, or do I need a re think? Hence the question.

        Thanks.

          Oh well, never mind.

So on she marches, (alone) into (seemingly) uncharted territory.wink

          dscf5643 (640x480).jpg

the rails are added, filled, sanded and two coats of sealer on.

Seeing that I now had a water tight hull , I thought I'd give my rough calculations the acid test. Here she is, ballested to my guessitmated 30 lb.

          dscf5641 (640x480).jpg

Right where she should be! Yipee!

Here's your photo for scale, Bob. The tape is extended to 12"

            Thank you, Amy

Your model is coming along really well and is of good quality workmanship, fit for purpose too

The shape looks good on the water and the stern is a good match

Would like to see the motor in position?

Now the crunch question!…….Are going to fit a passenger?

The usual dolly things look dreadful and so do fluffy Teddy Bears etc

I think a symbolic figure would look the part? Similar to the Artists bendable figurine, painted black?

On the other hand, an empty boat looks wrong too

Keep up the good work, it's a pleasure to follow the build

Bob. Here we have it. An empty boat is an anathema to me, but so many people insist on building airboats, two seater speed boats, cabin cruisers wink and so on without people.

Part of our modelling skills should surely include making (or at least, modifying) pilots/passengers and so on to populate these craft. We spend enough time on the boats but then lapse at the last hurdle.

A black figure as a symbolic token would look very naff to me, sorry Bob.

Amy is going to make the most realistic and lifelike figure as she knows that a boat like this needs a driver ….from just a suitably shaped branch! I can`t wait to see.

Alternatively. at this size, a small child might do.

Perhaps in the future we could have our own selves laser scanned, and then printed to the correct size by a 3D-printer!!!

                Hello.

                Thanks for the comments,laughvery kind.

I'm happy enough with the build thus far…

Bob, the engine will go in shortly, as it will determine the shape of the deck and cockpit to a great extent. (I will probably get her operational at this point, to save knocking the finish around too much whilst experimenting with props etc)

I totally agree with both of you about the skipper, I see too many lovely boats ruined by unconvincing figures.I don't quite know what to do about it yet, but will come up with something! (I put the tape measure on the smaller of my two daughters, but she scaled out at 12' tall!, the cat's about the right size, but may prove problematic!) I like the 3D printer idea though! (I think I'd better start looking for that tree branch…)

Figures are problematical. Realistically, the largest size of figure is an action man at 12 inches tall, and reasonable anatomically correct (if you use a bit of plasticene wink).

Anything else and its dolls or "action figures"…mighty muscled men armed to the teeth.

Any idea what size you might need?? this could influence the top as much as the engine protrusion.

                    Hi Ashley.

I'm thinking of a 2" = 1' scale at this stage. This would give a 32' (ish) boat, and a 12" figure would be just about right. I shall peruse the $2 shops and see what I can find.

                    Thanks

Can I make the following suggestion?

Have a nice big steering wheel, mid ships

Make a figurine from dowel and loosely assemble using string

Connect the steering wheel to a servo and use a splitter cable so that the rudder and steering wheel move in unison

Connect the pilots hands to the steering wheel

Sew together a suitable set of clothes……And you've cracked it!

                      Like the idea?

                                Hello all.

The engine and prop shaft is in. The prop shaft is a length of 3/8" ss tube that Lynn scavenged from some ones scrap bin. She cut the head off a suitable bolt, and welded it in with a nut and washer to make a prop driver.

                                dscf5653 (640x480).jpg

The other end was filed square and is a drive fit into the clutch dog.

Fore deck framed up, cockpit carlins and king plank notched into the deck beams and stem head. Strong, light construction and exactly the way I do it on a full sized boat.

                                dscf5649 (640x480).jpg

I wanted to have a long fore deck and rear cockpit, but once the exhaust is in there is no room, so a forward cockpit it is!

                                deck on

                                dscf5654 (640x480).jpg

Clutch mechanisim set up, and servo mount done. (this is and old servo, just for set up purposes, I have a new high torque servo on order)

                                dscf5650 (640x480).jpg

The rudder tube seats into a groove cut into the keelson.

                                dscf5651 (640x480).jpg

                                dscf5652 (640x480).jpg

The next step is to build a tray to support the top of the rudder tube and mount the servo.

                                Aj

I pick my photos carefully when submitting anything, or you would all see just what a state the boats get into when I start off, mind you the next one to be seen looks a right state, right up until I splashed some paint on it, and then it changed into a swan.

Amy. Please make a water skier to tow behind this boat.

                                        hello again

Hi Ashley, all part of the " tell it like it is process". I figure most builds look like this , up until the're finished, nothing to be ashamed of.

Water skier? how about a paraglider?

Servos in, I'll use my old gear until I'm satisfied that the boat knows it's a boat, not an aeroplane or submarine!, then I'll put the new gear in.

                                        dscf5690 (640x480).jpg

Throttle and kill switch. I'll spring load the kill switch servo arm, so any loss of signal will pull the arm back and switch off the ignition.

                                        dscf5691 (640x480).jpg

                                        ruder tube and servo in.

                                        dscf5693 (640x480).jpg

A start made on the engine cover. The entire aft deck will lift off, to provide easy access. (I want to be able to take the engine out, with out having to dismantle half the boat!) The cut outs in the front are for air intakes, and there will be a scoop aft for an outlet.

Here in NZ model making of any sort is not a main stream hobby. It is considered by most 'normal' people as the reserve of those who can't play rugby, cricket, get drunk, fight or crash cars. The hobby is not well catered for, (all though the internet helps). Most modelers don't advertise there "dirty little secret". Model shops are few and expensive, (anything up to 5 quid for a sheet of 1/8 balsa, don't like or use the stuff myself) Oh yes, we still have a taste for human flesh too.wink

My technical background? don't have one. I left school at an early age, with no tertiary qualification. I'm an upholsterer by trade, though stuff envelopes for a living. Any boat sense I have is from a 30 odd year life time of mucking around with, building, designing, useing and reading about boats.

Bob, sweetie, you are welcome to think and say what you like about my workshop, but I don't have a problem with it personally. None the less, if it 'offends thine eye' I can always poke it out for you!surprise

any way 'nuff of all that, back to the boat! I was poking around in my junk box today and found this

                                            .

                                            dscf5706 (640x480).jpg

It's the electrical socket for a yachts auto helm. I was racking by brains, (didn't take much) as what to use for a skin fitting for the exhuast. A few screw driver seconds later…..

                                            dscf5707 (640x480).jpg

                                            Not bad. ay Bob?

                                            Ka kite ano….

I am pretty sure once it is skinned rubbed down and painted it will make the perfect birthday gift.

I've been loving this build laugh

It just goes to show that you do not need spend a fortune in UK model shops if you have the vision to use what is at hand

When this thread was started by Amy Jane I thought that fitting that particular engine would be really difficult and maybe not worth the effort. Having seen this boat move forward in what seems like an organic way I can only really admire your build. It all just hangs together so well smile d

Some people are born engineers/problem solvers and I would say that you girls are definitely two of them the way you have overcome each issue without resorting to expensive solutions. I can't wait to see the finished result its going to be fantastic

It would be nice to see your model on a stand, so we can study the build better?

With a lovely blue sea background and palm trees gently wafting in the sea breeze…..or whatever?

A aluminium and glass heat shield under the exhaust and clutch servo in.
