Pulling in the main sheet is no problem.

        If you
let out the main sheet drum when there is no pull from the boom, the sheet will not
be drawn up through the deck pipe and will spool off the drum into the hull, all
        3.1m.
Some form of self winding mechanism will have to be put between the drum
        and the sheet deck pipe.
I am thinking along the lines of self winding dog leads/ vac mains lead.
        Has anybody any ideas?

Not a clue mate but surely letting the sail out will only be done under wind pressure and so the sail will pull the sheet out and so no problem. or am I missing something?

Most of the model sailing boat I have seen use a closed loop system with a pulley in the bow and a continuous cord around the drum. Sail sheets are attached to the cord.
When you signal the servo/drum to let out the sheet , the slack falls in the bottom of the hull until the wind pressure pulls it tight.

I cannot use this system as there are two main sheets each with a 3.1m travel. The useable boat length is 1.1m

The idea I am thinking about uses the concept of the flat coil spring inside an extendable dog lead.
The servo and the drum will not be directly connected which will remove any side load on the servo.
Inside the drum will hold the flat coil spring with one end attached to the drum and the other to the drive shaft.
The coil will have to cope with 7 to 8 turns as this max number of  rotations of the Hitech sail servo with Action Electronics “servo stretcher” to wind in the 3.1m of sheet.

Well that’s the theory, anybody got any better ideas?

The biggest problem I can see here is the physical manufacture of said spring loaded drum. I assume you have thought this bit through. Just a thought what if the slack was allowed to flake into a hopper in front of the sail winch with the sheet fed out off the side wall of the hopper at the base or do you forsee an entanglement problem with this idea. I’m simply trying to suggest the simlest solution as I’ve usually found these work best a quick drawing here to clarify

Hi ,      I’ve always used the elastic cord method of pulling out the main sheet on deck.       It keeps a constant tension on the winch line so the winch pulls it in and the elastic on deck pulls it out, simple.         I only have one line going to the winch drum, the other end attached to a 10mm ring, all the sails sheets (5) are attached to this ring as well as the elastic cord.         The ring is not a deck ring, its just a wire circle made from a paper clip and soldered together.              My boat is a two mast american fishing schooner like the Blue Nose schooner.
