        Hello,>>

I am building a boat to take my bait out in the lake, for the large carp, I hope to catch, I have already built the shell, but I am now lost as to what to do to make it go, as you can tell by this I have no knowledge of R/C equipment or how to fit it, and was hoping some kind person could advise on what to buy, i.e, motors, prop shafts, battery etc, I would like the boat to go forward, reverse, left & right, and open 2 flaps to discharge the bait. Would like it to travel about 100mtr’s out & back, and make 15-20 trips per session.                                    Please Help Greg.>>

Greg, I think the best way to go about this is to look around and get a mag with a free boat plan in it, and this will give you an idea of the layout of the various bits involved.
It depends how much you want to spend on the radio but a basic 2 channel 27Mhz set would suffice.
You need an Electronic Speed Controller ((ESC) for motor control back/forwards, a 6v 4.5 Ahr battery..or something lighter like a 7.2v 3700 MaHr NiMh battery and I should imagine an MFA 385 motor, from Maplins for instance, coupled with a coupling to a 35mm prop would provide adequate go. It wont be very quick, but the current drain would be minimal and so the battery stands a chance of lasting the day on one charge.
How long a propshaft you need (4mm shaft diameter) also depends on where the motor goes, and the layout of the hoppers. A medium sized brass rudder and tiller arm is required.

The hoppers could be released off catches opened by a suitable linkage off the rudder servo when pushed either side on the trim switch

A 4.5Ahr gel battery weighs about 720/750 grams, a Nimh one half this. The various bits need to be positioned on the boat with FULL hoppers to get the balance right. Thought also has to be given to balance once ONE hopper has been dumped.  Ashley

Might be a bit late now, but I notice that Howes Models who have a link on this page sell ready to run bait boats complete with r/c for £100 upwards.

Good thinking.I  even at this late stage it may be the best and possibly cheapest option. By the time you have bought all the bits you will have spent nigh on the £100. Ashley

Where? Where? I can’t spot it!

Greg, can you put a picture in our minds or can you google a link to something like it?

I can see it is on the smaller side.I mean some bait boats have tank style steering and some have single screw and rudder.

I reckon you could fit a hull for less than £50.If you bother your local burglar alarm contractors for free ex-standby batteries that’s another £5 saving over new. A small boat may not have both speed and endurance on one charge.
