It rather depends on what finish you are wanting to apply the varnish to.
Aerosols can be tricky as the solvent can react with the existing surface. An effective solution is often to use interior polyurethane varnish eiher sprayed with an airbrush or simply brushed on.
Don’t get the quick drying type (acrylic) of brush varnish as it isn’t really suitable for this sort of application. Ronseal polurethane varnish isn’t quite so easy to get hold of as it used to be but Wilkinsons in the UK do their own brand which works well.
You an use the exterior version but it contains UV filters which give it a slight yellow tinge so it isn’t very good on lighter colours.
