What tools are needed

Hi,

I'm just returning to modelling and have chosen to get involved with boats. I have done the usual railways etc but now I have a little more time boats are my choice. I want to start to get together a set of basic tooling that I will need so I'm looking to build up a list. Can anyone kick me off.

Its about time you knuckled down and made some model boats, a Huntsman perhaps now that the serious builders have taken the snags out of the design

How much money do you want to spend??

Are we talking decent power equipment or cheap pound shop tools.

For myself a basic set would be:

Power Tools:

Jigsaw, Drill, Sander.

Hand Tools:

Saws: Razor saw and Junior hacksaw.

Pilers: Square, needle nose and side cutters.

Pin hammer.

Screwdrivers and a bradawl

Craft knife and a small surform,

Clamps: Small and medium spring clamps, quick release G clamps

Measuring: Set square, steel ruler, micrometer,

I like Pauls list, has just about everything I normally use at one stage of another (barrring jigsaw) I would add a good cutting mat to this, makes safe cutting of thin stuff much easier.

I normally use an 18mm snap-off-blade craft knife.

A small bandsaw is also a must.

Guys thanks for all your suggestions and I will start to put the kit together. I want to do lots of reading of past issues to get up to speed so not ready to purchase anything at the moment, but will ask for advice when the time comes.

I must agree with both of you, however, I doubt if a lathe would be essential in building a wooden boat,unless you intend to make the entire propulsion unit also.

I agree with Bob though, that once having possessed a lathe, there is no parting thereafter.

While lathes are a topic of discussion I would like to ask for some advice as well. We have been considering purchasing one for a while, (surprisingly perhaps, my wife is also quite keen on the idea). I have a couple of Proxxon tools and I am quite impressed by their performance and quality. Has anyone any experience of the Proxxon PD230 lathe in comparison to other small lathes such as Cobra? I would also consider purchasing the associated milling attachments, so does anyone have any experience of those?

There are lots of small lathes on the market and not much to choose between them

The best idea is to visit a show, like Harrogate and have a play!

Milling attachments are handy, but a nuisance. They take quite a bit of time setting up and dismantling. You really need a stand alone milling machine

This is my lathe…..Just making two bushes for the Glasgow paddler, at the moment, as I hope to split the drive for independent paddlewheels

Hello Peter,

YOU have had a good section of tools , to collect for your work shop ,

all recomended by by all expert modelers , its down to what buget you work on ,

dont skimp on quality , also i would add a printer scaner ,a4 will do great to print of frames and little work areas , saves a lot of tracing ,

BOB i see you are having a go at a paddler using kit paddles will be watching you to see how you do it , still stuck with mine , ……thinking of selling my lulonga still strugling with drive chain ..Larry..

Hi All

I found that pin board pins of various sizes are also essential as are rubber bands, again all differnet sizes. Normal clothesline pegs also useful. Quite amazing how quickly a modellers tool box fills up.
