I am going to build a balsawood model. Last time i did that i used basla cement. I beleive that there are better suited glues now.

      Can you please advise me.

          Hi Brian,

For general woodworking use, use an Aliphatic glue. It sets quickly, dries clear, is effectively waterproof and is water clean up. There are a number of different brands on the market but you can see more details on the DeLuxe Materials website **LINK** which has lots of useful information. Also their Super Phatic glue is the water based equivalent of superglue.

You will need to seal your model when built before painting it. For this there are several options available including cellulose dope, sanding sealer, resin or the new EzeCote from Deluxe Materials which a number of people on this Forum have found very useful, including myself.

Ah yes but the smell of balsa glue takes me back a bit!

I dare say the formula has changed by now though, as I remember balsa glue being fairly quick drying, however the last time i used it , it seemed to take for ages to set.

Theres not too much reason not to use one of the superglues nowadays I suppose. The added benefit is it penetrates the wood and hardens everything up nicely..

I also loved the smell of cellulose glue!……. I also loved peeling it off my finger tips too!

Seriously though, balsa cement was difficult to sand down alongside the balsa wood

I would have used PVA on a balsa wood model, myself

Nothimg wrong with PVA white glue but Aliphatic is more water resistant, grabs more quickly and is better to sand down.

When I started work, way back in the fifties. I worked in an engineering drawing office

Some of the crackpots in the office, use to run up and down stairs a few times and then take a big sniff of Carbom tetra chloride……….And pass out!

The young folk ain`t changed, have they?
