Andy .  GP Speed 400s are 7.2v animals as far as I am aware. Does it say on the can, or are they  unmarked. 6v will do as well i should think for your application. You may not need all the 40A capacity of your ESC though, the motors are unlikely to pull too much in the way of current, i think GP recon 3 or so amps on max efficiency, and I think you will be using small props….less than 30mm?? Ashley to the rescue once again .Many thanks for your invaluable knowledge. My boat is slowly taking shape despite me putting in 56 hours this week .I’ve done away with the plastic props in the kit and used 3 x 30mm props that i bought with shafts and tubes all in one for about 2.50 each the only drawback was waiting for the speed controler from Antics despite the Bristol store having one in stock it took about 6 wks to arrive !!!!!
Have you seen these other speed controlers on e bay ? what do you think any good or not ?????????/
Many thanks from a cold and wet cardiff

Andy. I am not sue I would buy a.n.other  speed controller from e-bay. I do hope the props and shafts you have are not the cheap 2mm ones that come with a prop, as the props are most unsuitable, having almost no pitch. The shafts are ok, but it is difficult getting decent props in 2mm, one would almost certainly have to visit the prop-shop emporium. How big were the kit plastic ones??   Ashley

Hi Ashley just got in from work an waiting for the kettle to boil for my coffee and pot noodle, not all in 1 you understand !!! .
The props in the kit are 20mm but one is damaged beyond repair just re measured the ones i got from antics and they are 25 mm but will fit just right and the shafts have seals both ends . I am trying to keep costs down so when i seen these props and shafts i reckoned they would be ideal .This is very much a learning curve as i intend to build the e boat next .
With this new 2.4ghz system can i just use one transmiter and use diffrent recivers for each boat ??? is this possible.
Anyway i’m off as i’m back in work at 7am until 11pm,dont you just love the security industry ???? byeeeeeeeeeeeee

Hi Ashley just about to go to work and have found the origianol artice from model boats Winter 2007 wrote by Dave Abbot and you are right he used 3 x 20mm brass props and his pictures are really good.I normaly keep all my mags and kinda squirrel them away ,much to my ex girlfriends dismay. the props i can get from SHG model supplies at 5p under 7.00 each and i might as well get a 7.2 battery from them altough i was thinking of using westborne. Any recomaendations or are they both as good .
                  Many thanks
Andy from a damp ,cold ,cardiff.
ps yesterday was a long but fruitful day as i added to my scoree of shoplifters making it 17 to date from december. He was stupid as i caught him with bottle of wine ,i cannot get over the stupidity of these people it really amazes me !!!!! So all in all a good day but very tireing as i did not crawl out of bed until 11am and still have not done any more work on my boat.
Are you going to Weymouth this year ? if so let me buy you a pint for all your help
                  Thanks again Andy

Never had any problems with either supplier. 20mm props are very small and may froth uncontrollably with speed 400s I think. 3 X speed 280s may be better at that size of prop, but how big is this boat? obviously you dont want to underpower it !!   Ashley

                    PS when is Weymouth?

hi ash dave abbot has used 3 x 380 in his boat . The boat measures 28 inches stem to stern and 7 inches wide .Weymouth is 11th and 12th of july . Westborne dont do the small brass screws so i’m going to order from SHG.
                      Catch you soon

Andy, 28 by 7 is a fair size. i have found the (presumably MFA/Maplin ) 380 motors to be slightly less powerful that the speed 400s, but only by a bit. I have 2 380`s on my 4 foot HMS Glorious battlecruiser and that goes really very well, with 25mm props.  Ashley

Check my album. Just added three piccies of my 20″ Fairey Swordsman (mainly balsa construction). Uses a Graupner Speed 400 6v and a 7.2v Sanyo AA NiCad pack (800mAH). Goes like a greased weasel on laxitives. Prop is a 25mm 2-blade brass one from Prop Shop. You can now get NiMH packs of this size with over three times the capacity of the Sanyo NiCads. Three of these should shift your model at a fair old lick, methinks.
BTW my single ESC is an ACTion 10A Condor – I liked it so much I bought the business…..
