There are numerous web sites refering to rope fenders, but I havnt found one that gives clear instructions on how to make them, I know I can buy them from model boat kit suppliers, but I prefer to have a go and make them myself. (keep the old fingers from seizing up) Does anyone out there know where I can get any information on this subject.? Will once again be most grateful for any information.

            Robert,

There is a book called, surprisingly perhaps, ‘The fender book’ by Colin R Jones (no relation to me). We bought a copy from the International Guild of Knot Tyers’ stand at the Warwick model boat show a few weeks ago. They have a website http://www.igkt.net which lists the book as one of their publications for sale.

We (my wife and I) have not yet tried to make any of the designs in the book but it looks pretty comprehensive with lots of diagrams and should be just what you are looking for.

            Regards
            Gareth

Hello Robert, and hello again Gareth.

Gareth has given you the details of a fine, simple to use book, and I don’t hesitate to recommend it myself (even though I’m a member of the IGKT). I used this book to guide me in making side fenders, for a thames barge, and at Warwick in 2010 I was asked to make a large bow fender for an elderly gentleman, and there’s a picture of it attached. There are several fender types shown. The interesting thing is, with a hand tied fender, if you cut a string once complete it doesn’t fall apart like a knitted one would.

The book gives details for full size, but scaling down is no problem. Dependent on your scale, you’ll most likely find jute or hemp twine from a garden store to be of use, especially as its the right colour. Else source builders levelling line, the natural fibre one, and dye it before use.

Let me know how you get on, Kimosubby.
