we are going to fit a full r/c kit into a tug we have for the ladies to play with and ive been reading about esc's. is it really as simple as pairing the right motor/esc and batteries to get a fully functional forward and reverse action or is there more to it that im missing.

(props etc can be played with later)

in other words,we want to use minimum parts possible even if it costs a little more as we have a long way to go before fitting switching relays and modifying handsets etc.

      thanks,Darren

          Yes.

Provided that the motor can handle the prop, and the ESC can handle the current that the chosen motor will take from the chosen battery when turning the chosen prop. And as long as its a marine ESC that offers a central neutral, with proportional forward and reverse.

Is there a specific reason for switching relays and handset modifications?

no not at all,i saw someone had done it on another forum and didnt fancy that route.

theres enough suggestions that work,it just seemed a bit too straight forward. not much point in trusting the henglong set up,it is too fast and will only lead to another disaster

Squiz. It is as easy as you say. The boat needs a receiver, a servo (standard type) for the rudder, an ESC of suitable current handling capacity for the motor/prop combination and thats that. Simple two channel radio set.

Do you just have the one prop to worry about?? and what type is the tug..or failing this, dimensions etc

Does the tug have any sort of gear in it already?? do you have a prop?? the size of prop will make a big difference to the motor choice, and/or current consumption by the motor and hence the size of ESC.

its the henglong seaport, looks easy enough to modify from what i could see,if i could find the motor spec id just put the right spec esc in.ive acquired a full futaba radio set complete with everything so its only one decent esc to buy.that is of course if the fuatba gear can handle 9.6v,that i can find out though.if i can get away with that it should be an easy fix. famous last words…….

The ESC will probably have a BEC in it to regulate the 9.6v down to the 5 volts that the RX needs. Finding a way to hook 9.6 volts into any model type receiver will kill it. Finding the current that your motor uses is a matter of connecting your multimeter and measuring the curent. Alternatives are to either put a fuse in the circuit and try various values until you know the right area, or guess. One basis for informed guessing is to know the rating of the existing battery, and how long the motor runs before the battery is exhausted.

what an exciting afternoon, ive burned my fingers trying to blow a 5amp fuse and jammed the motor in the end until it got warm. still runs ok so im assuming its pulling less than 5 amps.i had fully charged 9.6v battery pack connected so i can safely now install a 15a reverse speed controller with bec.

will be great if it works as i will even be able to use the original battery pack.i fancy pulling out the wingchangchong thruster centralising mechanism as this seems a bit ott when a servo will go back to the middle anyway.

if nothing else i should be providing a few people a good giggle for a monday evening, this all really is very new to me and good fun i must addyes

A while back I picked up some "Liquid Plaster Spray" from my local Asda. A bit of string used to garotte the shaft in combination with pliers is generally kinder on the fingers.
