Having just started on new project a scratch built tug I was wandering what motor to put in.
Locally I can get a baitboat motor which appears to be similar to a 550 type with a rather slow speed at under 1A.
Not too sure if I can get a gear setup at this stage can I use direct?
obviously a good amount of deep torque is nice to be able to tow loads around at the club.
Size of tug is around 1m fibreglass hull and a guess of 5-6kg all up I would think?

Is this a single screw or a twin? How big is/are the props i.e. diameter and number of blades? What voltage are you proposing to install in the model?
A single 550-size motor doesn’t sound like the best type for the job in any event, unless it’s geared down. However, if the motor speed is that low already then you may be adding to your problem by fitting one instead of solving it.
I think your estimate of the OA weight is a bit adrift – these things sit very low in the water and conseqently need a lot of ballast.
