      Hi

I've spent all weekend looking at RC kit and tools.

Having looked at transmitters and receivers along with their associated servos I have to ask is there one particular brand that stands out?

My next question is how many channels?

I think from my point of view its better to start with the end in mind, so unless I'm totally of track then buy as many channels and as good quality as one can get. Or is this just going to be a waste of money?

      Kind Regards

      Kevin

What's your budget for a transmitter plus receiver? Servos cost very little and speed controllers are a matter of choice and matching them to the model.

            Hi Dave

Budget is very difficult to forecast given the amount of options and my lack of knowledge.

Speed controllers, truthfully I don't know what advantage they offer, I take it they are more expensive. I want to own and build 1/12th scale lifeboats, I'll buy one ready built and the other I'll try to build myself. There's also a possibility I will buy an Atlantic 21.

            Kind Regards

            Kevin

If you are just starting out Giantshark do this 4 channel 2.4GHz Radiolink transmitter including a receiver for about £27 + £3 post.

It'll do rudder, two motors and bow thruster, which is all you really need on a basic boat, and if with experience you decide you want something more exotic it's cheap enough to park on a shelf as a spare and not to feel it's a waste.

Most servos and other stuff will work with it – RC gear is mostly fairly standard once you get outside the tx/rx pair.

I think you need to do a little more basic research. Speed controllers are not an option/alternative to anything; you will need something to control the speed and direction of the motors. For 1/12 scale lifeboats you are talking big motors and serious money for speed controllers (probably brushless).

If your budget permits then I would suggest going for a "name " brand of radio with a UK service agent rather than a cheap Chinese clone. Buy a six channel set and keep to Futaba, Hitec or Spektrum as brands. I'd personally go for either a Futaba 6J or a Hitec Optic 6; both are sets which I use for testing. Some of the cheap 2.4GHz sets have a limited range; both of these are full-range.

I think that's good advice on research I'm off to grab a book or two and hope Togo along to a local Club meeting.

Thank for your tips and advice.
