Prepping my stuff for Kempton, woody,Tup,Bumper,Wallace & Gromit, Dying Gull and Golden hind. Be nice to take the Galleon but it fills the car up too much. Might bring the hydroplane if there’s any room left.

See you on Sunday (weather looks better than predicted, oops! That’s cursed it now!)

I am going wheeled for the show. Stalwart, Zis, Terrapin and Toyboata. I may bring Moana and obv I will have the bumpers with extra Dalek tops.

Good thrash on the pond with Colin’s new paddler yesterday. Went well barring that the mix on the twin Action esc needs adjusting….something you can’t see until it’s on the open water. A minor thing really and I have two differential drive craft which needed similar sorting after their first outings.

Chris E. Will have snaps of flat and 3-d Daleks after next Sunday at Kempton to judge on the effectiveness of the different styles. Forgot Dalek tops yesterday needless to say.

Very pretty Colin, paddlers do have a certain charm and a challenge to get to run properly.

And a great big fish (carp) tried to take a bite out of the paddler – true!

Looked like a depth charge going off underneath it. (or Bushy has a Nessie!)

For those of you that were going to flock to Bushy Park this morning, well, we won’t be there!

We will be exhibiting at the Kempton Steam Museum (tw13 6xh).

We will be artfully displaying all sorts of…craft…(and even the odd boat!) and sailing on the specially constructed model boating pool.

It looks like a beautiful sunny day is ahead, and I fully expect the bumpers to be a massive hit with the massive crowds.

This is a fantastic venue, the 5 storey 1000hp 3-cylinder steam engine has to be seen to be believed, and there will likely to be a traction engine there and a selection of stationary engines, besides loads of small steam and so on in the great hall. Other boat clubs will be there (we are not a club) not sure who.

                          C U there! Ashley

well, weather was ok, but it was quite windy, meaning conditions on the pond were tricky for some.

It didnt start well as the wind blew off a Dalek from the bumper table, dislodging the eye stalk and feeler, and the Tardis hit the deck with a thump and broke the base right off (no other damage, easy fix).

A couple of other chaps boats had electrical issues, but on the whole we were good.

Stand not as polished as per Egham but the wind precluded arranging the table covering properly.

We had 28 boats on display!

Yes, good show. Not as busy public wise as I was expecting, but , hay ho that’s life.

I think we’re on par with what other clubs are doing model wise, although we’re still slightly left field which ain’t a bad thing!

Nice boating Sunday, however the Mintanic (I was boating by bike again as had a band job in the afternoon) was glitching uncontrollably, for what reason I have yet to determine and was not cured at the pond by the usual plug reseats and so on, the glitching persisting even when I moved the esc well outside the hull on its wires, and rearranged the aerial, on 27M.

One of those things, it was ok last time….?

My mate Kevin Beally boy popped down with his crash tender/fireboaty craft, this time with a bit of weight in the stern which did improved to look, but it was still very tender at speed.

                                W e discussed options to reduce/cure this.

In order of easyness…. Change props for something less pitchy, swap the handedness of the props, make the props both go one way, add bias weight, fit trim tabs.

As we saw it, less pitch=less torque, swapping differential prop rotation may assist due to some hull hydrodynamic peculiarity, having both props rotate the same way might induce prop torque to counter list at speed, weight bias same but makes the boat list at rest….finally trim tabs, however the boat is quite thin to these may not be an option.

Other than the trim tabs, all the fixes are easy….

All sounds good Ashley, left on my own I probably would have changed from 2 to 3 cell lipo and fitted bigger props! More power…

Currently it is OK up to about 2/3 power then it all goes a bit twitchy (me and the boat), Like you say switching the rotation may help and easy option, I'll get some new props on order too.

                                  Nice morning out.

Today nice boating. Warm and sunny, park looking lovely. Bit of a breeze.

i took out the Glorious, but not before I had to work some oil into the stbd side propshaft bearings, seized up from a long period of non-use, the Pontoon boat, performing spectacularly as usual even in the blustery conditions, and then the two bumpers.

Peter, Trev and a new chappy, Simon (no not THAT one) with a tug and lifeboat.

Well, pretty much all the full sized Silhouettes (and most yachts) have an outboard as an auxiliary 'get you home' motor, and the same applies here, especially on the odd piece of water I use for sailing.

The outboard is operated on a simple press/ release switch with no speed control. It's just there when I need it. I did take ghings a stel further (it is a scale model) by making a day shape signal for it (the inverted cone), but that was just really for the photos and to keep on board with some of the other scale accessories I've made for it.

btw: the motor is fixed and the boat steered from the tiller operated rudder

Nigel, a very good point. A lot of yachts DO have small outboards at the stern.

Could be an easy way of providing assistance to a boat already built. The Hobbies outboard in its out-of-the-packet form could be powered from a cheap mobile phone power box rechargeable power thing.

Ashley, with the skipper, Action Man (known as 'Bob', at the helm it seemed appropriate to use an A.M. outboard.

They carry the batteries in the motor so I put a pair of contacts, separated by an insulator, at the rear of one of the batteries. The wires from these, laid out to resemble control lines, run through a dummy throttle unit in the cockpit, into the cabin where a simple servo lever pushes a non-latching on/off switch to complete the circuit. (3rd ch on the r/c)

I don't necessarily intend to use it so the motor is on a working tilt'n raise bracket to hoist it out of the water. This is NOT operated by r/c laugh so I have to make the decision before sailing but the initial concept was to make it realistic compared to the many example images I have of Silhouettes.

Nigel, would be interesting to see how well it went with no sails , only the outboard.

i am going with Berengar to the Watercress line tomorrow, for their annual “war on the line” event…ONLY..because of the Ukraine war they thought it would be insensitive to call it that, so it’s a 30’s 40’s revival thing.

Its a festival of wartime Britain, how can this be confused with war in Ukraine? It is essentially a historical reenactment.

Ashley, unfortunately I can't post video here but I have a fb page called Red Sails – and other colours where the boat can be seen on the move. The intention is to make the appearance 'scale', hence only a furled sail and flying dayshape, much like a sailboat returning to the Hamble from the Solent – too sheltered for the wind to be much use and also requiring the control in traffic you get from motor power.

The motor is a straight Action Man accessory, and the boat weighs 7kg (effectively over 3 times the weight of the f/s trailef sailer), so it's not fast, but it looks the part as it motors along the 'quay'.

He’s done it again! I have rescued a 6 1/2 foot ship this time (77 inches) unfortunately not for keeps!

The sea cadet hall we rehearse in has had a T42 destroyer model on one of the window shelves for as along as I can remember (likely it’s been there 40 plus years). It is in solid wood and is a no frills thing. The C.O once told me it was a test model when they were designing the T42, and indeed, when I took the funnel off, there are some but shaped brass pipes in the funnel, with a box to go with them. I am wondering if it wasn’t a model to check the exhaust flow over the ship?

Anyway, it had barely enough grey on it to cover and I have bought it home to paint.

It needs…the main type 1066 radar head, the 992 head, the comms/Elint centre mast, and some attention to the very crude sea dart launcher. Other than that, I am not going to add anything, just those parts, paint the hull/superstructure grey, deck dark grey, windows, and then mount it on a blue plank ( and add pennant numbers).

Its a whopper, although it doesn’t dwarf the 6’ Diamond.
