Nice mornings boating yesterday, fabulous sun, pond calm and flas a (#### insert favourite saying here). Kevin found his way to deepest Bushy Park and bought along his newly completed and very smart pilot/flying boat tender sort of boat (sorry can’t remember the make) for its first outing. General performance was good and the boat looked great out on the water, but lost a prop due to a suspected grounding which scuppered a second run.

I was boating by bike due to a possible car issue and took along probably the least exciting boats I have, in the form of the Mintanic and it’s 4 tops, but this also looked fabulous in the sun, with its crisp, smart distinctive paintwork (all 4 tops!)

Trevor bought the new sailing boat and ITI racer, and Richard a PIRATE ship, along with woody and a (pilot launch)?? He is doing up for someone. This had quite a spectacular performance but the massive torque reaction at more than 3/4 was also spectacular and it was very tender at speed. I think Richard will fit a smaller or less twisty prop to calm the performance.

Bit nippy today, and rather breezy. Perhaps not the best choice, but as boating by bike I took the Hobbies Hydro.

This can be a bit tender in even slight wind, so I hit on the cunning wheeze of putting a second 6 cell Nimh in there to give it some extra stability and this worked ok, no turnovers. Not only that, but bone dry inside afterwards.

Richard had the ‘Dying gull” (arr me hearties) and the schooner, both Liking the breeze.

Noel turned up with a small sailing boat which went quite well.

Early retirement due to numb fingers!

Sutcliffe Valiant tomorrow..looks like a nice day.

Plumbing issue when changing bath taps as an old steel pipe behind the bath decided to leak, corroded through…good job itsjust a trickleand it didn’t burst. Hot tank isolated. Big job involving multiple pipes and bath removal. I think it’s plumber time.

Super smashing today, lovely morning, sunny, calm-ish, warm….

5 boaters boating. Valiant going very well.

Park not busy…room in the car park when I left at 1230.

Thank you Richard. Of all my lookalike boats, apart from size, this is the closest yet to a replica. In fact, as there is no size reference, it could well be the real thing.

The originals seem to be attracting ridiculous prices nowadays.

Colin B has shown me pictures of the latest modification to his paddler. Wowser !!! spot on. IF I WERE HIM, I would not say anything to anyone and wait and see if anyone notices when it is in the mag…..

8 yard skip delivered to mums house, spent this morning loading all the cut down greenery on it…logs and so on. Satisfying. Will likely spend 2 days raking up all the small stuff.

Weather seems to have changed, after a nice Sunday a week ago. Not sure how it looks for this Sunday.

Lovely day Sunday. Good snapping weather, very bright but hazy sky. Snapped Tardis with Daleks.

Larsen Aqua Aircar and Hobbies Hydro running well.

Everyonelses boats running well, although not much wind. Great for Larsen, not so good the sail boats.

General tip: make sure you bring all the necessary batteries with you…..

Sorry Dave, it had just de-materialised!

Unfortunately I only have two bumpers, so I can only have the red one and Terry out at any one time.

I am however making a flat Dalek to see if it looks ok, and if it does, if the others want, I will make a set so everyone only has to make a base for a “slot in” Dalek top. This will enable us to have an invasion of Daleks on the water, and also they will essentially flat pack, taking up little room…unlike Derek, Clive and Terry who have two big boxes to travel between galaxies in.

Bit rainy Sunday, but we persisted. The WHOPPER went well, it’s virtually silent and so so smooth, likely the big plank hull damping out any vibration.

Speaking of planks, the focsle deck planking didnt like the rain, and crack/splits have got worse on the sides, so I think it’s fibreglass time. I had hoped it would be ok, but there we are.

Silhouettes for a Silhouette sailing boat.

Not actually sailing, but adding some detail to my 1/6 Silhouette by way of revising for my Day Skipper course.

The matching pieces slide together (as do the full sized versions) to make the Day Shapes "at anchor" and "motoring"

Sunday. Great day. Warm sunny, slight breeze.

Had a car load of boats down as my old ex-work mucker Kevin “beally Boy” made the trek from out east somewhere to be with us, bringing his fireboat (or was it a pilot boat?) and cabin cruiser, both of which performed creditably fast.

I had: Moana, Stingray, Terror fish, Swordfish AND my two bumper boats (with Barbie and Dalek/Tardis tops).

The flat Dalek I made for Peter looked good on the water and oddly enough didn’t suffer from being thin, even with the 3d Dalek out there. I have a feeling that if I had made a flat Dalek first I MIGHT not have made 3d ones?.?

Attendees. Peter, Richard, Trevor, Rob and Kev. Nice to see loads of different boats out on the water.

If your flat Dalek is just a painted & detailed  flat piece of foam the world is your oyster. Cartoon model aircraft have been around for many years. Dragons, Witches on Broomsticks, Father Xmas, Angry Birds, Statue of Liberty, Thunderboxes, Cans of Cambell Soup and pretty well anything else – even profile model ships.

I can see that sailing accross your view the 2D Dalek might not look very different to the 3D but from any other viewing angle?????

Chris. Yes well they do look a bit “flat” end on, but the 3d Daleks width also alters depending on the angle. It’s for “the look only (or I would have had to make ‘proper’ Daleks. Perhaps the oddness also contributes to the fun.

As the things are in constant motion the decreased width (!) is not in my opinion so great an issue as (says NOT having a floating Dalek, Davros next…and perhaps a flat K9?

Richard. Great pictures! Very nice indeed. Slightly larger boats always seem to look a bit better out on the water.

Great boating last zsunday. Nice day, flat calm.

or at least it WOULD have been good were it not for a couple of issues with the two boats I bought down.

First.y HMS Midge, the 1890s torpedo boat after very quick spin became intermittant, and wiggling the battery connectors showed that the  power was going off. Soldered joints on Deans ok so assume there must be some grub somewhere, and then HMS Hasty, the same era TBD was horribly noisy, looking like the complete steering servo was loose. I tried wedging foam in there which made it useable at very low speeds. On investigation at home, the glue holding the mount had partially dried out, so I pulled it off and re-glued it with Gorilla glue.

THEN Trevor’s Jet Dragonfly EDF had seized up due to some EzeKote having got inside after some previous waterproofing work last time. An unforeseen consequence of lengthening the sail servo arm stopped Rob sailing (there was little wind in any case)

That just left newcomer John, with a very impressive pair of 50s era iow car ferries to provide the days sensibleboating with trouble free and very smooth and quiet operation, well detailed with figures and period Corgi cars.

I normally take more that two boats, but starting off, it didn’t look as nice as it turned out to be. Such is life.

Managed to "unstick" the EDF, a bit fiddly but saved a lot more work.

Jessie running a lot better, preparing the fleet for next Sunday's annual outing to the Kempton Pump museum.
