Good, if fairly pedestrian boating Sunday.

Large weed free section by jetty but not enough for fast shinnanegans.

      Fireboat, Larsen and Saucer out.

Fireboat had a monitor blockage which I couldn’t clear without some dismantling, and a good suggestion was to have some nylon line handy as this could get round the bends etc, so upon returning to base, I found some q.wtmm strummer line which does the job, and a bit now resides in the box. All parts of the water system are actually quite easy to get to, and I will put on some mesh to cover the sucky inlet (was in the plan but have not got round to yet).

I have similar problem with the fire monitor pump on my Robbe Dusseldorf. I put an in line filter in but when that blocked the pump burnt out, just try to avoid sucking weedy water now.

Tim. The bilge pump that powers it is designed for mucky water and can handle some weed i am sure (?). All the pipes in my system can be unplugged from the monitors (bent 5mm brake pipe) and blow or rodded out, and the water receiver that takes the pump output is large enough for easy visual inspection. The new strimmer line will clear the actual monitors easily enough.

However, its a bit of faff when at the pond, and with loads of monitors a few not working is not the end of the world!

Off to look at the Sonic Sippi plans now….and stick some mesh over the pump inlet!

sonic Sippi hull built, all 135gm of it! A few issues coming up re motor and so on.

Tomorrow I am car less (run out of MOT) so will be boating by bike with the Mintanic, as that’s what I built it for!!

Due to play at Guildford castle grounds tomorrow afternoon wi’ ‘t brass band. Going to be soooo uncomfortable. The bandstand is a stupidly small thing and the pillars supporting the roof are positioned inside the railings getting in the way. It is well tree shaded though so should be ok re..sun.

Trouble with boating by bike is you only have one boat.

Having turned the radio on and put a battery in the Mintanic and turned the edc on, I twiddled the sticks and rudder was ok but there was reverse only. I switched the fwd/rev switch on the tx but then I had fwd only.

I lifted the top off to be greeted by the dreaded SMOKE! And after hurriedly disconnecting the battery, I saw the insulation had melted off one of the motor wires. Fuse hadn’t blown. Game over. Presumably the esc is knack.

Other than that everyone else had fun.

                Never a nice experience. crying

I can't see how an esc fault could melt motor wire insulation but I could see a short circuit somewhere in the motor or its wiring could write off the esc and melt the insulation.

Sounds like your fuse was a little overrated!

Hi Chris. The wire wasn’t black, it had just got hot enough to melt the plastic, and so I suppose I caught it before it shorted out and did something really bad.

i will carry out a few tests first on all the components. Like you, a bit puzzled…we will see !!

Received the reprinted Bushy Park Boaters banner for Egham today. Need to work on a stand for it to raise it up.

Sonic Sippi coming on well. Tested the rotor on a speed 600 and it was vibration free As far as I could feel.

Making a motor cover now, and once that, and a spray shield have been made, I will give it a whizz (can use a taped-on temp hatch cover).

Ashley. (Gosh there’s some funny boats going to be featured in October’s mag as seen in the what’s coming up page at the end of Septembers mag)

Having trouble making a vibration free rotor for ‘Sippi. The first one seemed to be ok on a had held speed 600, but was awful on the boat. A plain disc also vibrated, so a third one has been made and tried on the wood lathe but even then I am not sure my cheapish lathe is up to it.

i am going to fit paddles etc and have a go at balancing it using my aero prop balancer.

if not?? I might have to get someone with a Myford lathe involved, and get an aluminium one turned up..if I knew anyone that is…..

Repaired the ram bow on the Sutcliffe (again)

Made a banner stand for our banner wot we will use at the Egham show on 27/28 August….lots of ‘secret projects” will be on display!,

ALSO….have been sorting out wot boats to take, and how to display them…basically..having blue foam underneath so they sit properly. The Stingray looks good with an upwards tilt, and the Seagull will sit on a raised stand (like I did for the flying boats) so as to give the display some height, although we will probably layer up the back with covered boxes again.

Banner stand done and looks really fab.

AND… the car passed its MOT no issues.

Although it was in for a full service the man said it needed nothing doing (the oil and filter were changed in May) and that he was embarrassed to charge me for a full service so they just billed me for a checkup!!! Thats why we use this garage!!!

He had said in May that there was a bit of a rattle from the cat and I feared the worse, but hey ho. Another years cheap motoring (only 3000 miles since last MOT.

Good boating Sunday, the “Ultimate” went well (until I went over a mudbank and filled the squirty bits with mud stopping them working). Mintanic, now ok with new 3 blade plastic prop and new esc, and Ferry.

A much larger weed free portion of the pond to play with after the rain.

Cracked the Sippi flywheel issue by trueing up the big disc on the pillar drill.

Whizzes round nicely now, nice and smooth, like…ay.

Back from our epic showing at the Egham Royal show.

i think we had about 24 or 26 boats nicely displayed on my nice silky sky blue cloth (including bumpers and tops as a homogenous bunch).

”Bushy Park boaters” banners hung nicely from the tent walls, and free advertising for MB came courtesy of a few choice cover copies laminated and hung up, featuring some of the displayed boats wot have been featured in it.

Egham royal show 2022. The Bushy park Boaters stand.

There`s no doubt our stand stood out a million miles ahead of the others despite (sob sob) not winning "best table"(or something).

The banners hung well on the tent side, the other stuff less well, but we didn`t know what the situation would be and didn`t want to bring loads of stuff for all eventualities. I did have a stand-lone banner stand, but it was not needed.

We identified several improvements and additions if we were to do it next year…bearing in mind we don`t DO shows as a thing unlike a lot of clubs.

As an aside, due to various circumstances, the Whitton modellers club is down to three members I heard. A bit of an issue for a club, but not for us….as we are NOT a club!

I should have guessed which "funny boats" feature in next months Model Boats you would suggest that we looked out for. If it is unusual it has your name written all over it. smiley yes.

The bumper boats look great fun and, I suspect, are a crowd pleaser. You all appear to have got the black bumpers to work without the normal creases associated with insulation & pool noodles bending around tight corners which must look much better.

Stand looks good & very professional. Having spent money (!!!!!sad!!!) and got it sorted are you all going to do more shows? As your models have some celebrity status I think there would be interest in your doing so.

When I was a kid there was a 'bumper boat' attraction on Shanklin seafront which closed down many years ago but has seen a revival with the redevelopment of the amusements as Pirates Cove and Jurassic Bay..

Yes, bumpers in Octobers issue. To my mind, the ideal `club` boat. Great fun, no prior experience required to operate, indestructable, cheapo to build…..but you will read all about that.

The `rubber ring` black bumpers are one of the things that make these work, again. all in the mag.

Plan included !!!  My first and probably only plan submission. In-magazine page plan and not a flimsy pull-out jobbie.

The stand is impressive mainly due to the shiny covering and bright boats. Very little money has been spent really, a few (18m) yards of cloth, a banner (second free due to error on first one, spot the difference) and doing a bit of copying and laminating.

The chaps and myself are not fussed with doing many more shows…probably Egham next year and Kempton again, unless something local pops up. Money has been spent just to do the one show as if you are going to do something, do it well, Having a half baked stand would not make us look good.

The banner we will use at the pond just to draw attention to the boats and generate interest.

Obviously totally your choice but have you thought of a model show which is visited by lots of modellers and large numbers of families. The obvious one to me would be Wings & Wheels at North Weald but I am sure that there are others around London?

                                            Wings & Wheels 2023

                                              Hi Ashley,

Sounds like you have an ideal arrangement being a local group of enthusiasts using the lake at Bushy Park, the majority of clubs have to be formed to get the council's permission or in the case of my club at Bluewater shopping centre that of the management company, as soon as you elect a committee they normally have to do all the work ! the bigger 2 day shows are hard graft and expensive once you have factored in the cost of travel Gazzebo's insurances, and the temptation to spend Hundred's of pound at the retail stands Ooooop

That's why I'm going to Headcorn show this coming Saturday, and will be on the Maidstone Cygnets stand with Veronica my TSB.

                                              Regards Ray

Chris. Good spot about in-mag digital mag plan viewing. Perhaps we have pulled one out the bag by having an in-mag plan????

The free in-mag plan is, as far as I know, not to scale, but it doesn`t need to be as you only need the measurements. Having a template for the body is handy and that is I think at 25% or 50% scale and needs to be enlarged, as instructed on the plan…an easy job.

I have viewed the finished cad drawing but obv don`t know what it will look like in the flesh.

                                                Good points Ray regarding costs.

Are they still to be posted? All that is in your album are some HMS London photos – and nothing else is included amongst them.

I agree that scaling plans is easy. As I said I like plans included in the magazine as I get to see them even if I am unlikely to build the model. One of the advantages of plans is that the model can be built to different sizes with a little effort.

There seems to be an issue with my Ashley’s Boats album. I can see it (157 snaps) and my avatar says xx posts and 156 pictures, but it says 0 photos when I log on, but if I click on it I can see all the pictures…..and it’s obv not available to view by others….Assistance please Colin?.?
