      Hello Bob

      Good question

The real boat is trimmed with fins that are on the side of the sponsons.

      ghost trim.jpg

The circles show where these fins are, they work in the same way that submarine dive planes and rudders operate.

To use a gyro system I would have to install a similar set of control surfaces.

This is the fun bit, getting it to work and if I were making this I would probably dunk it in the oggy asap (before actually finishing painting and so on) and see what happens first. It may be obvious what needs to be modified once you actually see it working.

The small canards could indeed be used with a gyro device to maintain levelability, but I have a feeling that it will be the balance and attitude of the sponsons that will be the key. One would not have thought that the sponsons will porpoise, but once the bubbly bit gets going this may alter the ride height do to altering the bouyancy of the sponsons?? perhaps?? As they are cylindrical one would like to think that they will behave much the same with the wings spread as with them more upright, the diference being the altered c of g overall.

Some means of adding ballast to trim the sponsons, easily, would be on my list of wants, as would a shallow stretch to attempt the first run on…

          Hi Ash

The key to this project has always been the balance / attitude of the sponsons…. hence the need to have the majority of the mass contained within them. (also answers the C of G question)

Hopefully a gyro system wont be needed as the wings should act as the major control surfaces and the fixed ducks will take care of the trim.

The porpoise worry comes from not knowing how the sponsons will react when the air system is switched on.

The ballast / trim will be worked out dry on a balance point but there will be easy access to alter the trim weights when sailing.

The water at Runcorn is shallow enough to recover the boat if it all goes wrong.

            Dear Kevin

            A brief update on progress.

The cabin is half constructed and to keep the weight down I have used foam board and balsa and to spread the imposed load from the wings/sponsons I have introduced a 15mm dia tube sub-frame that sits in the centre of the cabin.

No photos yet as I want to keep you all guessing.

            Paul

btw I don't like working with balsa

Thanks Dave for that vote of confidence.

                Update:

The sub frame that supports the wings is now in place and the 'boat' is now sat a clear 6in above the floor on its copper legs….it looks like something from HG Wells darkest imagination………all it needs is a ray gun and a couple of Martians.

Jane reckons it looks like Sidewinder off Thunderbirds.

No photos yet as I am keeping Kevin guessing.

No response from designers but that's only to be expected as its probably still a classified project over in Uncle Sam land.

Oddly enough there has been a strange laundry van parked in our street, nothing strange in a laundry van but it has a satellite dish on the roof.

Hang on someone is at the door, back in a minute.

                            Hi Kevin

A quick postcard just to let you know what's going on.

A couple of very nice chaps have invited me for an all expenses paid trip to Cuba but I had to leave right away.

Anyway I arrived safely at the sun kissed resort of Guantanamo Bay, the flight over was very smooth and excellent 1st class service in fact I had the full attention of the crew as I was the only passenger.

On landing the 1st class service continued as a chauffeur driven car was waiting right next to the plane and I was whisked straight out of the airport without having to go through the tedious customs and immigration procedures. I am a little worried though as my luggage has been mislaid but my personal tour guide promised me some fresh clothes when we arrive at the resort.

I was made to feel like royalty as we zoomed across the island with a motorcycle escort, we drove straight through red lights and didn't slow down at all until we reached the resort.

The resort is a very exclusive place and is what my tour guide described as 'gated' I am certainly very impressed with the triple rows of high voltage fencing and razor wire….not to mention the total ban on phones and cameras as this demonstrates my hosts commitment to un-interrupted peace and quite.

My accommodation is a little sparse and doesn't have a roof but as my guide explained I have a superb view of the stars…………..tomorrow I think that we are doing water sports as I am sure I heard them talking about surf-boarding.

Looking forward to a relaxing day tomorrow

                            Bye for now

                                  Dear Kevin

For some reason the alarm clocks keep going off every 20 minutes, which is very irritating and if I hadn't fixed the dripping tap I wouldn't get any sleep at all. The tour guide seemed a little upset that I had to fix the tap myself instead of asking room service…at least that's what I thought he said as he went off muttering about fixing his wagon.

There must be a disco somewhere nearby as there are plenty of flashing lights but the DJ must be very considerate as I cant hear any music.

I am a little disappointed about the lack of TV in my room but judging from the number of screams that I have been hearing there must only be horror movies available over here.

                                  Bye for now

                                            Hi Amy

Nice choice of destination…..the resort is a little strict but the food is good.

                                            Dear Kevin

I have to say that the hosts take great care of all their guests as an example just take a look at the sun bed protection that they use……..no chance of any early morning Bavarians nicking my spot.

The water sports weren't that good as they couldn't find a board big enough for me but I cant complain as the chaps did their best to find a suitable board and when they couldn't they tried to amuse me by spraying me with a hose pipe….but it wasn't the same and I could see that their hearts weren't in it.

The other guests seem to keep themselves to themselves and don't talk much when the guides are nearby but when we are on our own they do chat a bit….and there is a real mixture of accents some of which I just cant understand but we all get along very well.

In fact I have been enrolled in an informal team, which is all great fun, as we have to think up comical ways to get out of the resort.

There are 3 teams, Over The Fence, Through The Gate and the team that I am in The Diggers……it is a little like being in the Scouts as we have secret nods and winks….but all done in high sprits, the guides pretend not to know but I can see that it is all part of the resorts entertainment.

The Diggers are having a sand castle competition tomorrow which should be fun.

The resort owners are very keen model boaters and have been asking about Ghost and where I got the drawings from…….that's easy, I said, as I got them from my good friend Bob.

The resort owners kept asking if any other people had been asking me about Ghost….I didn't really understand who they were talking about as they kept referring to enemies of the state, insurgents and commies…….I just presumed that these were teams in other parts of the complex.

I had an odd conversation with one of the guides, who is called Yuri, he said that, when the time comes, I should be ready to move fast……..he must mean the sand castle competition.

Signing off now as its tea time.

                                              Hello Kevin

I have had a very odd 24 hours, the day started very well with the sandcastle competition even though a couple of the chaps dug to deep and had to be rescued by the tour guides, this was the first weird thing to happen as they had not only dug down vertically but also dug a tunnel horizontally that reached almost to the fence.

After this the guides decided to treat us to a display of their larger sea tourist boats….it was a very impressive sight to see these grey boats dashing all over the bay……it was almost as if they were looking for something.

When the boats were at the far end of the bay another holiday companies vessel appeared, it was a submarine with a faded star on its conning tower so naturally enough I assumed that it was from the lone star state of Texas and sure enough it had letters on its side that I think mean Chambers County Community Project, I think this is a very impressive project for a small community to build especially as where I live the community cant even sort out a park bench.

Yuri then said its time to go and we took a rubber dinghy over to the submarine, the other guides seemed a little put out by this and ran off….presumably not to be outdone by a rival company they went to get their own submarine.

When we were onboard I couldn't understand the language but it seemed as though this holiday company is called Keepsake Great Beaches and we are on our way to a place called Krylov.

My new hosts are also very interested in the Ghost and have spent a couple of hours discussing it, they also managed to retrieve some photos of the prototype from my phone.

Have to sign off now as we are submerging to escape a thunder storm, even through the hull I can hear the rumble and bangs.

                                                    Dear Kevin

This trip is turning into a real Boys Own adventure.

The crew on this submarine are very friendly and love to talk about all things floating. For some weird reason there is no wifi but the Captain said we would get a signal when we surfaced to meet a supply ship,

The supply ship is huge and we actually surfaced inside it (Ashley would love this)

If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes I wouldn't have believed it as from outside the supply ship just looks like an old oil tanker but inside its a hitec ship yard, I managed to get a couple of photos before my battery died.

Apparently we are on our way to St Petersburg which, as I remember is in Florida…….but why a submarine from Texas is going to Florida is anybody's guess, maybe we are going to Disneyland.

                                                    Paul

Dunno about Disneyland, how about Wonderland.
