Just about to start fitting the stanchions and rails to the stern of my “Ben Ain”.

   Having drilled where the stanchions go ..do I thread the rails on first and then fit or do I fit the stanchions first and then thread the rails after ? which is easier…also should I heat treat the rails?

I have found it much easier to bend the rails to near enough the correct shape first.  I have always used brass wire/rod as the rail material and never bothered to heat treat it.  Then thread all the stanchions on to the rails.  Finally locate and glue each of the stanchions in turn, making any further small adjustments to the rails as you go.

 

I found that if you fix the stanchions first,  then try to thread the rail through, it jams in the holes and the stanchions get bent or broken.

The way I do stanchions is I get the outline of where the railings go. I then trace this outline onto cheap plywood and drill the holes where the stanchions must go. Note the holes must hold the stanchions securely. if there are any bends in the railings then bend the wire to the correct shape and then thread them onto the stanchions. now move the stanchions into more or less the correct positions. Press the stanchions into the holes and then make sure they are up right and then solder them. gently ease out the stanchions, clean up the railings and glue into positon on the boat. I find that painting them before mounting makes the job so much easier. The smallest railings had stanchions of 12mm in height with 4 rails and they came out very neat.

I use a similar method to that described by BB, and nearly always paint the railings before installing them on the model. However, in the case of my Armidale class patrol boat, I painted them on the ship, as they were the same colour as the hull.

Well Learner John, that is what friends are for. We all learn from each other even the “older Salts” still have something to learn we are not perfect but we have paid dues in many trials and errors. Learning One thing means we have learnt a thousand other ways of how not to do it. I hope your railings turn out well
