I am in the process of building a "SEVENTY" by John Simpson.  What I cannot grasp is, how do you connect a threaded prop shaft to a non threaded electric motor ?  I am a new boat builder I must be crazy starting a new hobby at 69!!

        Hello John

        Simple!………..You need a coupling…………one half threaded……one half plain.

Make sure the motor shaft and prop shaft are dead in line with each other.

Hi John and welcome to the heady world of model boating.

The connectors that fit between the shaft and the motor will overcome the problem as some of them are fitted with small grub screws that allow for adjustment and connection between dissimilar shafts.

The connector is a universal type joint such as you find on car prop shafts and a quick look at some web sites will give you lots of options.

             Hi John

You are only a youngster at 69, we have members in their 80’s in our club and I’m amazed when they tell me their age. Our Commodore is 79 and I’d thought he was younger than me!

And think of all the time you have to build boats, instead of going to work and building only in the evenings

Expect to see your model pictures soon

            Ducky

Do you know…………….I really do envy the newcomers to the hobby…………….It used to be such great fun, discovering what was required to build a model for the first time and getting out in "any weather"………….to see it sail for the first time……………..remember those days…Fellas?

The fun is still there for me……but the models need to have that …."something special"……..ie Great Eastern and the latest Jeanie Deans at War………..and Ashley`s Icebreaker………..and Paul`s plank boat (when he makes a start)
