Hello about 18 months ago I built my nephew a footy yacht, when it was complete it was tested on the water and worked fine.I decided to give it to him for his next birthday so got it off the shelf to check all was ok.When it’s switched on the servos give a little switch as normal but when I use the controls there is nothing. The only thing that happens is when I move the transmitter arial near the boat all hell breaks loose with the servos.Has anyone got any advice before I start buying bits to see what the problem is? I used a standard 40 MHz futaba 2 channel system.Thankyou for any help.Andrew.

Check the batteries first, also the conections. If the radio has been left for a while you often get poor contacts. Next check the contacts of the crystals, and make sure the transmiter crystal is in the transmiter not the receiver.
It’s probably the batteries, they account for about 90% of faults.
Let us know how you get on.
          Charlie.

I would also check the wiring!
You’ve had this running satisfactorily before but now its doing nasty things. It could be low batteries, but I’ve had problems like this and traced it to the dreaded black wire (which means replace all of it) and corrosion on connectors (try sliding any connectors together and apart several times to check contacts.)

I avoid using any sliding switches, they are always prone to corrosion, I simply connect up to power on. On my yachts I use magnetic reed switches, the magnet used to trip the switch is in the end of a short piece of tube which is inserted into another tube across the bottom of which is the reed switch.

Just a thought, the receiver ariel is this attached? and its not all coiled up in a bunch?

Thankyou both for the advice, i solved the problem this afternoon. As it is a footy you can imagine access is tight but managed to get the battery pack and its connector out, plugged in a new pack and she is up and running again. So yes it was a battery problem thanks again too the both of you.Cheers Andrew.
