Halfords red primer is a close colour match to the anti-fouling rust coating on the Titanic – my current build. What is the best product to seal it and protect it from abrasion? Halfords make a clear laquer but it is said to give a high gloss finish which would not be appropriate. Water proofing is not the issue as the hull has been covered with four layers of fibreglass/epoxy finishing resin prior to the second planking. Any advice would be appreciated.

HI Jeremy, as your hull is sealed just flat the epoxy resin to an even matt finish then apply the red primer to your hull, there should be no need for a sealing coat, also if the paint is damaged a quick spray will cover the sin

As Mark says, it isn't strictly necessary to seal the Halfords primer. However, on the belt and braces principle I do seal mine using Ronseal polyurethane interior matt varnish which will totally waterproof it.

It must be the traditional polyurethane varnish and not the quick dry variety as the latter can form a skin on the primer which can eventually peel off.

Halfords do a 'satin' laquer, this will do the job, I used it on my 'Dutch Courage', looks a treat. smiley

To illustrate Kip Woods' point about Halford's Satin Lacquer, this is the finish I obtained with it over their Red Oxide Primer on my Lobster Boat (hull is balsa planking with glassfibre cloth and epoxy resin):

Halfords satin laquer it shall be. I didn't even know they made one. Anyway, many thanks to all respondents.

I've found it on a different display stand from the coloured car paints and primers in both our Halfords' local stores. Don't give up looking – it'll be there somewhere!
