I have just removed all the R/C equipment from one boat and installed it in another one, now the steering control on the transmitter works the speed control and the speed control works the steering, how can I correct this obvious error. As I have stated in my previous correspondence in the forum I have only started building boats since last August, I have built two boats now but I have no idea about R/C.

It sounds as if you have plugged the speed control and rudder servo leads into the receiver the wrong way round. Try swapping them over.

easy mistake to make. i usually plug one lead in the battery socket. Takes me ages to find out whats wrong. Ashley

In the words of the great Douglas Adams "Don't panic!". There is nothing complicated about radio control – all the clever stuff has been done for you and hidden away inside little boxes. Thank you Dave for your help, I have reread your article and is does deal with my problem, as the old saying goes when all else fails read the instructions. I am now up and running.

My first boat was a scratch built Sea Commander , to my surprise it did not sink and it goes very well. The second is a 46 inch Huntsman built from a kit , I had more trouble building that, than the scratch built Commander, its first trial is next Sunday.

Any suggestions for the size of brushless motor I require to improve the performance of my 46 inch huntsman,

at the moment its running on a Graupner 600 speed which appears to me to perform very well but according to the experts it would run better with a brushless motor, your help would much appreciated as I have no idea..

Greetings all

As you may know by reading my many queries I have built two boats during my short time in this hobby, both go very well but they are very noisy, I can hear the motors from the other side of the lake, are all model power boats very noisy or have I done something wrong. Should I mount the motors on a rubber base to deaden the vibration, any suggestions would be most welcome.

If I do fit brushless motors to them I will let you know the outcome, I did not realise how expensive the equipment is,

I cannot see how the prices can be justified as they only consist of a rotor and a number of field coils or have I got it wrong.

Sounds like you do not have the motor and propshaft correctly aligned or you have not greased the propshaft.

I'm sure one of the resident gurus will get back to you on this in a while.

I take it that you have a universal between motor and shaft ?

Thank you for your quick reply, yes I have oiled the prop shaft with engine oil as there is a school of thought that greasing the shaft clogs it up, who knows . Yes I have fitted a universal joint to both boats, I have yesterday realigned the shaft I will see if there is an improvement at the next launching this Sunday.

I would like to hear any thoughts on Powerflex couplings as they are supposed to be quieter.

I have tried most types of coupling in my short modelling career and have found that these are brilliant !

I find that their main advantage is that they can be cut to the required length and have no parts that wear out like those plastic universals

If space is ever at a premium, then Robbe Centring couplings (Cornwall Models, Engel etc.) mean you can have a coupling that can accommodate up to 5 degrees of misalignment in a total length of less than an inch, including the bosses, which are obtainable for all the common propshaft and motor output shaft sizes.

Mike's suggested couplings are indeed excellent, being virtually silent as well, a hidden benefit.

The couplings themselves are unlikely to be noisy unless horrendously out of line.

I am afraid you will have to go through the usual checklist and replace items to find the issue.

propshaft/coupling/motor alignment; motor not secured properly; propshaft not adjusted for minimum play; play in shaft bearings; prop thrust being taken up by motor and not outer shaft bearing; dry shaft bearings (drip of oil) coupling not drilled dead true; propeller out of balance (try different); something touching coupling; actually something else vibrating..hatches and so on.

To save removing all the r/c equipment from one boat to another every time I change boats I have bought another compatible receiver and another speed controller, when I connected it all up nothing happened ,the lights lit up and the speed controller started flashing a red light, but the motor did not run, as I cannot find the instructions that came with the r/c transmitter do I have to tune the speed controller to the transmitter and if so how?

Your assistance would be much appreciated..

I cured the noisy transmission I complained about by fitting a flexible coupling to both boats and filing the red universal joints to the WPB.

Hi Brian

What Transmitter and receiver are you using. Is it 2.4GHz. If so, you may need to pair the receiver to the transmitter. Knowing what make it is will help.

Thank you for the quick reply. The transmitter is a ETRONIX PULSE 2.4 GHZ FHSS 2 channel.

The receiver is a ETRONIX PULSE 2.4 GHZ FHSS 3 channel.any advice would be most welcome.

Looking on the Etronix website for manuals, found the procedure as follows.

1. Turn on receiver
2. keeping the binding button pressed (possible on the receiver or TX, can't tell which) plug in the RX power supply. The light should turn green.

Once done, you should not need to do it again.

Let us know how you get on.

Hello Colin & Andy

I finally got round to tuning in the receiver as you both suggested,a painfull back stopped play . I must admit I have never noticed the Binding button before as the previous setup was done by someone else. However I followed the instructions and got the receiver light to show green, great stuff, but the motor will not run, I get growling sounds but it will not run, nor will the rudder move. Any Ideas?
