Posting a few pics of the QE2 leaving Hobart at 6PM.

On her visit to Port Arthur and Hobart we had 28C on Monday and today 27C, but, that is the end of summer today.

Hope you all enjoy the photos.

Both pairs about 2 weeks ago, thanks, Harry – but how did you know? It was becoming embarrassing falling off kerbs and walking into lamp-posts, especially without the assistance (?) of my friend Jack. I'm seriously considering investing in a new pair for close-up work with my flip-up 3x magnifying lenses, then I'll have replaced the full set.
Mind you, with what I've just spent at the optician I could probably have bought a ticket for a cruise on QM2!

Never noticed the rear end on her maj before….how odd, ugly even considering they must have spent millions on the overall design. One can only assume it was cheaper to do like this…ie underwater shape verses rounded stern, but even so….

There is more to it than that Ashley. It is what is known as a 'hybrid' stern which combines the hydrodynamic efficiency of a moderate transom for improved fuel consumption with the features of a cruiser stern which reduces the effects of 'slamming' in a seaway. Anyway, that is what the designer, Dr Stephen Payne says. The design was tank tested on a model.

                    Hi Dave and Colin

I had a double seniors moment, the name and it was Monday and Tuesday.

The only day I remember is model boating day. the important things.

The stern looks like we will add a bit .

The old Queen Mary is a better looking boat.

I seen her on the last voyage from Hobart, I will see if I still have the photos.

Yes, the Queen Mary is more elegant but having been aboard both, QM2 is rather nicer on the inside!

Perhaps the designers could have worked at the aesthetics a bit more at the stern.

                        `Nuff said.

Ugly ships that lack the graceful lines of the old Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary.

These new ships are prime examples of commercial cupidity packing in the pasty faced passengers like cattle on the way to the slaughterhouse.

If that's a cruise ship then it's truly awful. Surely a [badly] converted container ship? It would be more suited to use as an offshore prison. I gather that the 'smaller' container vessels, built only nine or ten years ago, are now going for scrap at silly prices because the new locks on the Panama Canal will accept the real monsters of the deep. Crazy world.

It is a livestock carrier but the similarity with modern cruise liners is uncanny, it is just another example of a solution to to the problem of mass transport…..cram them in, feed and water them until you reach the destination then unload and reload.

If you remove all the bars, restaurants and fripperies from the Queens then there wouldn't be much difference between the two vessels.

Airlines are the same – passengers referred to as self loading freight.

I imagine that before that particular ship sets sail they have to consult the sheeping forecast…

I thought it was another load of convicts dropped off a Port Arthur and a restock for supplies.

On to Hobart Town to pick up the convicts who finished their sentence.

Changed over garrisons and resupplied Hobart.

Drop off a few free settlers.

Paul. That is a truly appalling ship, but no doubt you can pack`em in and make shedloads of money from it.

Its probably the best way to transport livestock but I wouldn't want to be a crew member.

I remember watching a documentary about one of these ships being loaded in Australia, there was a seemingly never ending stream of those huge road trains bringing the beasts to the ship and it still took 24 hours to get every animal loaded.

All that beef on the way to burger factories and not a chip in sight.
