Prop shaft tube

I’m about to drill a hole into the keel of a new fiberglass lobster boat that I just had built.  It’s for the prop shaft tube.

 

My question: What should I use on the inside of the hull to lock the tube in place?  I was planning on just using some 5200 adhesive sealant and load it in the keel around the tube, but I don’t know if that will work.

I usually use a generous quantity of Milliput, forced in to fill any gap and then moulded into a smooth shape with water on my fingers. I have never known it to fail.

You can use….

Araldite…(some say 24hrs version is better than the 5 min version)

Car body filler (P38 etc)

Fibreglass resin and tissue mat

Silicone sealant

Miliput, as has just been suggested

 

They all have their fans. theoretically  some are better than others depending on who uses what. I would be happy to use any of that lot to fix a prop tube in a fibreglass hull (but for the sealant option the tube needs to be a snug fit in the hole you have made, just in case there is too much movement)

i found useing p38 is very good for fiberglass but you do have to play about with it to get it smooth and make sure the hull and tube are clean

 

i use it on powerboat hulls  works well for me

I use P40 for this job – also for sealing round the tubes of bow thrusters and holding rudder tubes in place. It has chopped-up glass matting mixed in with the paste so it has more strength than P38. You can smooth it with a finger dipped in standard thinners – but don’t tell the HSE!

I ended up using something called JB Weld.  It’s seems to have done a good job.  Check out my pictures of “The Illusion” and you will see it in the pictures with the deck removed.

 

Now, I’m just waiting for the pond to melt so I can try her in the water.
