As i have the day off from work and at a lose end i thought that i would get the plans out that i had enlaraged for the rodney./nelson . I was only when i opened them up that i had that homer simpson moment you know the one DUHHH as my board is aboyut 6ft and the plans abour 8 ft and this would not only make it to big to build it would be heavy and would not get out the door or window , so it's back top the drawing board i guess!!!!!

Hello Andy

If you fancy a longish boat, it can be made in two halves quite easily.

Just make each half watertight and bolt them together, with the screws above the waterline

We have a chap in the club with a 48" oil tanker and converts it to a 84" tanker!…..By using a common rear drive end and a front end that bolts on

I should imagine an 8`-0" tanker with a bow thruster, would be quite interesting to control and steer through tricky areas?

Paul i guess it's just lack of confidence and i'm not 100% sure on such a big challenge , or room .I would love to build such a big craft but i have the problem of transport and at that length i would not fancy taking it on the bus as a few times i have had boats nearly destroyed by some stupid woman who is 1/2 blind and cant see my boat in it's carrier and goes to put a buggy on top of it .A taxi would cost to much and although a great friend has a van he has not always got the time .Out of intrest how would i go about joining the two haves ??? What about the super structure ?? and as i would like all 3 turrets to turn what about the electrics ??

Bob gave a guide to building a split hull earlier on in this discussion, you basically choose a mid point frame in the hull and instead of fitting the frame you create two full height bulkheads, the hull is split at this point for transport and is bolted together when you get to the lake.

The superstructure, which is usually a lot shorter than the hull can be a single piece, which in usual practise is separate from the hull, or split in a similar manner to the hull (although the bulkheads don't have to be watertight)

The turrets being electric can be connected at the bulkhead split point with a simple plug/socket arrangement.

The confidence to build a big model come with experience but I can say that there is no skill difference between building a 4ft model and building an 8ft model. The difference in skill level occurs at about 10ft after which the model requires the extra structural strength to support its own weight.

I was in Smiths today , my favorite libaray !!! , and i seen an article about a guy from South Africa building HMS Ajax and that has given me a few ideas but i still would like to build a large scale boat . In a rare tidy up i came across a set of plans from Nexus by a C.Bingham and its just over 3ft at a scale of 1/20" = 1ft so i will stick with this for now and go for the larger one at a later date . But i am tempted by the trumpeter bismark .
