      Dear Readers

I have returned to model boat building after many years of being to busy and now I have found that I cant use ant of my old petrol inboard engines. Apart from some dubious health and safety psychobabble I can find no good nor realistic reason for these engines being forbidden. Can any of the members cast any light on this subject.

        Hi Billy,

Some councils allow CI engined boats on their waters, but most are conscious of polution also noise emissions and also the speed that some boats can achieve and the dangers to wildlife.

Regards and welcome back to boating,

        Len.

Hi Billy and welcome back to the sleepy land of model boat building.

This is one of my favourite subjects as I can not find any real justification for the banning of IC engines.

Steam as more dangerous, electric can be just as fast and yobs on motorbikes create more noise, it just boils my blood that faceless people in some low level of tinpot authority take it into their heads to issue such pointless and biased bylaws.

This is really an annoying issue. As you both point out, there are many more sources of pollution and noise than model boaters. It’s not as though there would be hordes of IC users at any one time.

Where I used to live in Northern Scotland I used to run petrol boats on Findhorn By, which is part of the Moray Firth. As full size power boaters used the bay there was no restriction. Obviously this was salt water and tidal, so really only suitable for reasonably large boats.

I can’t wait to get back there some day.
