I recently swopped out a Naulantia which has all the scale bits removed and sealed over with epoxy which was very thick and unsightly so I sanded the lumps down to deck level. All fine so far .On applying the aerosol undercoat the whole layer of paint came off the hull top, in fact I could not have done better with a paint stripper! I have since removed all the paint on the deck but I am worried to respray as the side may also get affected. Any clue as to why the paint did what it did? The hull was painted/sprayed over the original by all accounts. Would say the cans at the toy shops fare any better? The can used by me was of the industrial brand I normally trust the best and have used many times over. Interestingly the rudder and cover plate did not do the same thing. Really confused with this one? Please help?

The solvent in your aerosol obviously reacted with the original paint finish. You will need to strip all this off before you can start again I'm afraid.

As Colin says your problem is most likely a reaction between incompatible paints / solvents. Strip all of the old paint off, thoroughly wash with warm soapy water and then rinse with warm water to remove all trace of residue before re-painting.

When dealing with an unknown paint coating it is advisable to conduct a test on a small and inconspicuous area.

I had the same problem once,I just painted the existing surface with water based quick drying undercoat from B&Q ,it worked for me, a couple of coats should be okay

Kevin, you can use a Blocker , This stuff is great , i had the same issues as you and took it back to the wood and the same thing happend again . At my wits end a local trade paint supplier said i should use this Blocker . all you do is rub down the affected area then apply the blocker the surface is then sealed .

Thanks for the feedback. I did try a spray on the rudder and the closing flap and all went well at the time. I have scrapped right back to the base in any event. Will try a different brand when starting over. Here in Africa we don't really have many choices though! will post the outcome once done. Thanks once again.

                    Hello Kevin

I didn't realise that you are in Africa as your specific location in that mighty continent will have an effect on any paint spraying operation.

Heat, dust, humidity, insects….even the time of day will impact upon the quality of the finish.

                    Paul
