      Hi all,

does anyone have any experience of model outboard motors?

I'd rather not hear about Graupner as they seem typically overpriced, but more any other makes or home mades. Preferably geared rather than those ugly flexible drive versions. I guess something more scale than ultra performance.

Just throwing out some questions for now.

      Cheers,

      Martin

            Arthur,

I believe they are well thought of, but expensive. The main users of outboards, http://www.152vo.de/ don't go for geared versions generally as they reckon the gears can't take the torque of brushless motors.

To that I would quote memories of seeing Millar Agnew's AMPS models where geared o/bs were fitted with Rossi and OPS engines, yet were geared lower units. So, who knows?

Hobbyking now do two different flexi drive o/bs and the newest is a very scale looking product for a very reasonable price. It even has a lubrication facility that takes a syringe of grease, making maintenance easy. I have ordered one without a motor to save costs until the boat is finished.

            Thanks,

            Cheers,

            Martin

              Hi Martin

I have two of the brushless outboard units from Hobbyking of the F1 tunnel hull.

One problem is Hobbyking do not carry spare flex drives for them.

Power from the standard motor on a 3S 2650mah Lipo battery is very good.

You will require a 9.45KG servo to get it to turn(Trackstar TS-400MG or a TS-410MG).

I have one on a shallow vee balsa boat and on full throttle the hull is off the water.

                  Harry,

thanks for the report on these. I am going for the lubricatable CNC one. Most use the more obviously flexi drive one, which can also be bought from TFL in Germany or Offshore electrics in America, both of whom do spare drives, bearings, etc. The steering on 152VO boats has to be through cable and pullies, like the real boats. It's the rules!

I was very impressed by the Hornet tunnel performance with this motor.

All the 152VO boats are very accurate wooden models of original (mainly American) kneeler hydros of between 1924 and 1960. They have to have period dressed plausible driver figures with life vests and helmets. All boats have to have their numbers added up (kV, batteries, prop size and pitch and must not exceed a certain number) so there is flexibility, but no piling up the cells or the kV and it makes everyone work for evenness. A fantastic race class that has taken Europe by storm, but no doubt will be lost on boring British model boaters.

Harry, that's the motor that most of the guys use, since it became available, because as I mentioned it can also be had from TFL in Germany and Offshore Electrics in America.

If that wee boat is balsa I am not surprised it doesn't much touch the water!

But it has a superb performance. the new motor seems a lot more scale in leg appearance than the rather over long one above.

This is the one I've ordered. http://www.hobbyking.co.uk/hobbyking/store/__66147__CNC_Aluminum_Outboard_Style_Boat_Drive_w_2630kv_Motor_Suit_HobbyKing_H2O_Style_650EP_.html
