just completed shamrock patrol boat . and i am now putting in all electrics . however when i start up the motor, shaft is vibrating and is noisy . i am cocerned that it will be louder than the diesel sound and siren i am putting in . the motor is mounted on metal mount epoozied to fibreglass hull . is there a quiter motor to recommend or how do i reduce noise ??

Hi brian , the prop shaft vibration would seem to suggest it is a bit out of line , i would say that the vibration causes noise that reverberates through the hull  i would re align the shaft / motor and try it again you may find by solving one problem you actually solve both , hope this helps , Regards Andy

Before you jump to any conclusions, see what it is like in the water. You may not hit the revs required to cause vibration in the shaft.

Shorter, larger diameter shafts resonate at a higher frequency.
A larger, low rpm, propeller driven by a geared or high torque motor will keep the revs down.

Always a good move to try in the water first, several of my boats are very noisy  unless sitting in the water. It loads the prop for one thing and doesnt let the motor overun, and also damps down the hull vibrations.

Doesnt mean to say you wont have to re-align the bits, but if you  dont need to then it makes life a bit easier.

Usually I go for a double coupling straight off, as then you definately never have alignment probs (within reason!!)    The SHG marine plastic couplins are good for accepting masses of misalignment, they are a bit rattly though in thyemselves.
