Hi. I am new to model boating. Something I have wanted to take up for a long time, so I have taken the 'plunge' – hope I don't get too wet!!

I have recently bought a used model of a River Thames police launch which I intend to restore. (length 25", beam 7" – I work best in feet and inches!) It has an old electric motor which does not work – I knew that when I bought it. I had thought if it was possible to fit it out as a radio controlled boat. Does this seem a sensible idea?

I thought that if this is not practicable I would still restore it and keep it as a display. I have purchased plans for this model boat so would like build a new boat and make this a radio controlled boat.

Is there anyone out there who has a similar model who could give me any advice on the best way forward.

Also any advice on the best way to sand it down would be most appreciated.

      Thanks

The late Phil Smith (Veron's designer), designed the model around the model in the NMM (link).

I was planning on using a Graupner eco 600motor. Never finished mine as I was unhappy with the build and still have ideas to build another.

                Hi again India21

Meant to mention earlier that the searchlight (illuminating or non-illuminating) and air horns are still available from Reade Models. These are the same as were originally supplied in the Veron kit of yesteryear – advert in Model Boats magazine or tel 01606 871170

The fittings are shown on the cabin roof of mine,

These are fantastic looking boats, as a beginner I'd like to build one, how difficult are they to build? I never see them for sale, although I did see plans on EBay recently.

                      Hello Kevin,

I see your profile is blank ,

if this a first time build, there are a few faults on drawing ,

but nothing major, my plan was a Waverly model version…

went together quite well once fualts where put right,…..it sails well .

and there is a web page on line for info , hope this helps cheers Larry….

                            Kevin,
The first stage of the build is to cut the parts for the central box. This is built from 3mm balsa sides (part A) and ends (part F2 and F6), with two sheets of 5mm balsa butt jointed as a base. Nowadays I would substitute the 5mm balsa base with a 5mm liteply base, as no joint would be required. Shown as stages 1 and 2 on the plan. Quite easy to do but make sure the parts are cut square and the top edges on the sides A are cut to the shape on the plan.

                            police launch 2.jpg

Any further questions please ask, and remember to open an album and post a photograph when you get to this stage or even better, when the box is glued together. For choice of adhesive, white woodworkers glue (water resistant) from the local DIY store is ok. For general building advice, the builds by Glynn Guest which regularly appear in the magazine are ideal for balsa builders.

                            Hope this helps,

                            Tony

                              Hi Tony

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me along. I'm just sitting here in my living room going over the plan, my Golden Retriever is joining in the fun, which isn't helping!

I'm off to buy some wood to give this a try, I have to admit that on initial reading of the plan I was tempted not to bother, but actually as you go through it stage by stage it starts to jump off the page, I guess it's going to cost me a few quid and if I fail then hey ho!

Thanks again for the support Tony very much appreciated Sir.

                                Hi Kevin,

The thing with this model, and others is to break it into logical steps. As you can see it jumps out at you. Nothing difficult, just keep the parts square. All models cost a few bob, but taken a little at a time it is a very worthwhile and rewarding hobby.

                                Tony.

p.s.- we have a ruby cavalier king charles spaniel, who loves to join in and enjoys walking over plans laid out on the floor.
