my wife wants me to build a Tyne-class lifeboat and myhobbystore has a plan/hull combination on offer, but there is no advice available as to what type of fittings to use or……..

      1) Motor

      2) battery

      3) rudder

      4) prop shaft

      5) propeller

      are suitable.

At 31", this 47 foot boat becomes 18:1 scale. Not a standard I've seen before. So all the deck fittings etc would either be out of scale or have to be customer made. I'm no expert on model boats so would really appreciate the advice of a more experienced modeller.

Hi Anthony and welcome to the forum.

The running gear is the easy part, but the non-standard scale will be difficult for deck fittings and so on, as you say, unless you make them yourself. This is the question really…how much do you want to do in the way of detail, and is home-made or shop bought the way you would sooner go?

Are there other plans at a more commercial scale, or even a hull available (with plans) to assist this?

THEN you can worry about the running gear! (I would not worry about that, it is relatively easy) There are several lifeboat gurus out there who will no doubt give you much better advice.

            Thanks Ashley,

Good advice. I'll put my thinking cap on before I jump.

My biggest problem is that being a pensioner, funds are rather tight, and because of various ailments I struggle to make small items. I'll continue looking.

              Hi Ashley,

My wife spotted a nice wooden hull fishing boat, 'The Andrea Gale'. I won't need a lifeboat then.

It seems there are a few kits about. It would be nice to have a recommendation though.

              Regards,

              Tony

Second-guessing Mrs Ingle would be a task too far for most folk on here! If you like wooden kits then the Aeronaut range are pretty good, as are the old-style models made by Vintage Model Company. "Andrea Gail" is a Billings kit and they aren't renowned for clear or comprehensive instructions.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I'll have a think before proceeding.

If your wife is desperate for you to build a Tyne then go to MODELS BY DESIGN and buy their 1;12 scale Tyne with both cabins and, I think a semi pack of fittings for the boat…….much more accessible for fittings at standard size and easier to work. plans are also available for them.
