Hi All Can any one help me, I have just ordered a fiberglass hull of a RNLI Mersey Class lifeboat its 38 inch long at 1/12 .

I have seen one at a model show I went too, and talking to the model maker how made the boat said he used 700 motor on it, but I don't think you can get them anymore.

dose any one know what other size motor that will work, for this size boat, and dose it have to be a brushless or not. The power used will be a 12v hoping to use a sound system in the boat

Christopher. I am not a lifeboat man personally, but there are loads who are, and I am confident several of them are going to post soon and tell you exactly whats needed !!

There must be hundreds of these exact same models out there.

What size is the prop fo a starter? (or is there two?) and also the beam of the vessel. Should be fairly fat, I would imagine so motor options are not limited. a nice MFA 850 would do if nothing else..

Hi Ashley the prop shaft are being put it the hull for me, and the props I will have to find when I get the hull from the suppliers, its a birthday present from the wife.

I know there are two shafts and I think the boat is about 18 inch wide I think, some one I was talking to said the same thing about the motor use 850 or a brushless motor, the power will be 12 volt gel pack .

I may put in some sound unit in it, see how it go first.

            thanks any way Chris

              Chris,

If it is a large boat then I would re think the idea to use lead acid gel cells as they are not designed to give the high discharge rates that the more powerful motors require. OK for a tug or slow prototype but not for a fast lifeboat.

No doubt somebody with more experience of this sort of setup than me will be able to advise.

If you are building a true to scale model then the motor size will be heavily influenced by the size and type of the propellers.

I agree with Paul, have you been given any advice from the manufacturers???? The props are the critical factor, scale props possibly 60mm, will need powerful motors.

Going back to Ashley's post he suggested the MFA 850, a pair of these would be a good starting point.

                  Post again with more details

If you do use a pair of MFA 850's with 60mm props, I would reccommend you use water cooling.
